This Shanghai Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean Video Must be Seen to be Believed

Wow indeed!

Sad that it's limited on AA's, but it's still very impressive with the video pieces!

Although, it looks like no matter where you go, flash pictures on dark rides is *a thing*...

I would love to see this in person!

 

You guys might remember that I said a few times that POTC at Disneyland has a plot that moves too slow. Well, I can't say that about Shanghai! The ride is amazing and perfect!

On a side note I want to strangle all the people taking flash photos during the ride.

 

WOW!

This looks so great. My favourite part is at the beginning when the skeleton transforms into Jack Sparrow.

 

It does look incredible, but I think I'd have to reserve judgement on how "realistic" the experience is with all of those screens until I saw it in person. It looks a bit too CGI on the video. I liked the nod to the jail scene, but I expected twists on a few more classic moments to be honest. It really does look amazing, but I have a hard time seeing it as POTC without those signature scenes.

 

The way people were oohing, aahing, snapping pictures and recording it appears that the experience is as over the top in person as it appears in the video.

 

At least people who have experienced the ride seem to be impressed.

 

I thinking that the attraction looks very impressive. It might be worth going to Shanghai just for this one attraction. (if one was rich enough ) While it's not all AA's I think that there is a really good mix between the projection and AA.

 

This definitely relies more on screens than I would like, but by all accounts it appears to be well done. Many of those things would be impossible with physical effects, and there are also a lot of physical things, so it seems like a decent compromise. There also seem to be some really neat effects throughout the ride

It's interesting that this appears to be more of a traditional dark ride with set scenes that take place for each individual boatload of guests, rather than a looped scene that can be joined in progress. I wonder what impact it will have on the ride's capacity

I'd also like to get a better understanding of the ride vehicle. I think I saw some of the rotating that we've heard about, but it's tough to tell what's going on in a lot of places. Hopefully future videos will show more

 

Yeah - I see we've come full circle. Now, the attraction is based on the movie.

It seems cool-ish.

I'm an old man, so I prefer the original 'Pirates' at Disneyland.

 

I'm gonna disagree. 'Pirates' at Disneyland is damn near perfect. The new Shanghai version is like a high-paced action movie. Fine I guess, but not DL.

 

I'm sure if and when I go to SDL, I'll enjoy it. BUT ... and for me it is a rather big but ... it is lacking the humor and charm of the original.

 

I think my last post is perhaps a bit too negative. In a way, I am glad it is not a near clone of Anaheim's, or any other the other parks. That would be boring.

I was thinking this as well. The ride seems to be as advanced and as groundbreaking as the original Pirates was when it first debuted back in 1967. It's that rare convergence of cutting edge and old technology to create something completely new and unexpected.

Until now I've only experienced DLP's and WDW's POTC and the one in Paris is by far better than its WDW counterpart. Next month I will ride the original one in Anaheim, but according to Tony Baxter, the one in Anaheim will not make much sense for us Europeans, because they reversed the ride for Paris to give it a better fitting story. That's why Americans are sometimes disappointed by the pirates ride in France. I'm really excited to see the differences.

I think I will also prefer the DLP version over SDL's POTC. It's one of my all time favourite Disney attractions and the one in Paris is the one I "fell in love" with. I wish there would be two lines at each resort. One for the original POTC attraction and one for the cool new thrilling POTC ride.

 

I agree that this version seems to lack many of the elements that made POTC such an iconic attraction. It doesn't look like a bad attraction by any means, but it sure doesn't look like POTC to me

As with most IP-driven attractions, I wonder how much of it will make sense for people not familiar with the IP. It's easy enough to understand the battle scene, but the underwater/Davy Jones parts don't make much sense on their own (and how is your boat floating in water when you're underwater?). Chinese lack of knowledge of US films has been pretty widely reported, so it will be interesting to see how this attraction fares with that audience

 

I prefer the DLP version. Maybe it's because I grew up with it, but for me the story line hangs together much better. I couldn't understand how if we're floating in a bayou we end up in the Caribbean and the time travel thing makes less sense as well as it comes half way through the attraction. I also found it a bit slow to get going as well. It's still a classic, but I was underwhelmed.

This new attraction is so different I can't see any reason why they couldn't install it somewhere like DHS and still have the original POTC at MK.

 

I'm doing my best to skip along the posts, avoid the videos, and keep myself spoiler free...because if this is as awesome as some say, I MAY just have to skip over to Shanghai and see for myself...
