Trump gave a speech on energy, I think. Or maybe energy and guns? With a side of EPA thrown in because patriotism. Anyway...

What a disgusting word salad of pandering, misinformation, flat-out lies, and ignorance. Not to mention bad grammar.

But let me just focus on this one. This whole "Hillary is going to abolish the Second Amendment" thing needs to be pushed back against, and hard. Both on the factual merits, and because it (should) make Trump look like an idiot.

First of all, Clinton has never said anything like wanting to abolish the Second Amendment. The only restrictions she's favored are the ones 80% of Americans and even 70% of NRA members (as opposed to its leadership) favor. Very modest things.

But let's say just for the sake of argument that deep down, she really did want to abolish the Second Amendment.

    She couldn't.

Newsflash, Donald. The only thing that can abolish a Constitutional amendment is another Constitutional amendment. Like the way the 21st amendment repealed the 18th (Prohibition).

That's it. That's the only way you can rescind a Constitutional amendment. With another one.

And how does that happen? First, two thirds of both houses of Congress have to vote for it. Which - here's another newsflash, Donnie - would never, ever happen, certainly not in the current (or the 2017 Congress). Can you imagine Congress saying "Hey, I know. Let's vote to abolish the 2nd Amendment!" And then 2 thirds of each house voting to do so? Yeah, right.

If that all-but-impossible thing happened, THEN 3/4 of the states (38) would have to vote to do the same thing. Can you imagine even a handful of states doing so? Let alone 38? Again, never ever ever would this happen.

Notice who's absent in this whole process? That's right - the President. The President has zero role in any Constitutional amendment process. Not even veto power if Congress passes one he/she doesn't like. It just goes straight to the states at that point. The President has zero role. At most, he/she can vocalize support or opposition. That's it.

So anyone who says "Clinton is going to abolish the Second Amendment" is only revealing his ignorance of how the Constitution he claims to love so much actually works.

This is a simple one to call him out on. We should post stuff like this on message boards, Facebook pages, etc. etc. Because, sadly, a lot of people will believe that Clinton wants to - or even COULD - "abolish the 2nd amendment." And sure, a lot of people who read the correction will reflexively go into denial, I get that. But at least a certain percentage will have to say "hm, that's right. That's not how it actually works."

And it could raise the thought in at least some people's minds that maybe Trump doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

More like exploiting the ignorance of his voters, really (though in Trump's case, I honestly could believe he really doesn't know how it works...something I couldn't even have said for Bush W.!).

Yeah, I could believe he doesn't really know it either. He's just parroting what he heard at the NRA convention.

It's actually hard to say what's worse. That he doesn't know himself how the Constitution works, or he does know and is intentionally pandering to the ignorance of his base. But those are really the only two choices.

I think it is very believable that he doesn't have a clue how it works. In his private empire, he is the ultimate ruler. He thinks the same thing will apply in the government. The problem is all the wasted time explaining to the idiot what is required, unless, he is planning on issuing an executive order abolishing the constitution and that wouldn't surprise me even a little even if it wouldn't work. Someplace deep inside I believe that the American public, as a whole, is just not that stupid, but, it usually is a major mistake to overestimate the intelligence of our citizens. And that would be very, very expensive, OK!
