So the film is coming out and it's been very strange to say the least. It's become a battleground for overgrown man-children complaining about 4 women as the Ghostbusters. Meanwhile there's another group that says if you didn't think the trailers look funny, then you where a sexist. Meanwhile the man-children have voted the film down on IMDB, down vote any positive reviews that reviewers give. And of course the old my childhood is ruined because ew women. To which I ask have they seen Ghostbusters 2? My take, I'm not as familiar with Leslie Jones, but I think the other three actresses have been in some very funny stuff. But the trailers and tv spots have left me a little cold.
I'm not really interested in the new Ghostbusters movie. The old ones are classics and I don't need the new movie. Additionally I don't like Melissa McCarthy. Her humour is so dumb and stupid and I fear that the Ghostbusters movie will feature that kind of humour.
Even though I agree with DAR about the look and feel of the trailers (haven't sold me on wanting to see the film)... I'm going to defend Melissa. Yes, her humor does run in the vein of the Hangover movies. Which I generally tend to avoid. However... that is what a huge swath of the movie-going public wants now. That kind of humor. It sells tickets. Lots and lots of tickets! Which is why filmmakers continue to crank them out. Personally, I like Melissa's films. They aren't in my top ten list of all-time favorite comedies. But they are entertaining. I liked Bridesmaids, The Heat, Tammy, and Spy. Haven't seen The Boss; I'll wait for cable to grab it. And I'll most likely do the same for Ghostbusters. I do believe a huge chunk of the criticism is gender based. Women are constantly slammed for doing comedy. It's still deemed mostly as a boy's club, even in light of the huge success of Amy Schumer's TV show and film. And I personally believe that this accounts for at least half of the negativity against the latest Ghostbusters. If this was a remake with Seth Rogen, James Franco, Josh Gad, and Kevin Hart... you wouldn't hear much criticism from the old white guy chorus upstairs in the theatre balcony. Yeah, David Edelstein and Richard Roeper. I'm lookin' at you!
I haven't seen the original Ghostbusters in many years, but I know it's got a strong following. I'm not opposed to a remake with women in the lead (there seemed to be a lot of positive buzz about it when it was first announced), but this just doesn't seem very good. With all that talent in one film, it seems like everybody is trying too hard, and the whole thing is coming off as forced. I also really dislike Kate McKinnon, so she's sort of the nail in the coffin for me. I might have given it a chance, but I struggle to sit through 5 minutes of her on SNL, so I think a feature film would be painful I am excited that apparently Hi-C's Ecto Cooler is making a return as part of the promotions for this film. I haven't looked for it in the stores, but I drank far more of it during my childhood than I probably should have, so I feel like I should get some for old time's sake!
The backlash on this movie is bizarre, isn't it? You know what's cool? The original 'Ghostbusters' movie still exists!
Saw it tonight and absolutely loved it. I'll be honest I went in expecting to have to defend a so-so, mediocre movie because holy crap the misogynists freaking out over this movie suck. But yeah, the trailers weren't good and the reviews have been mixed. But it's legitimately great and I could not stop laughing. It loses a bit of comedic steam towards the end as the action picks up, but that's maybe my only criticism. Leslie Jones is a little underused for someone who is so manically funny. Beyond that though, I loved it. I'd easily give it 3.5 stars, probably more like 3.75. I'm truly stunned at the critics who didn't like the movie (and who aren't part of the woman-hating brigade). The crowd I saw it with was laughing nonstop. I thought the trailers weren't great and now that I've seen the movie I think I understand why. The characters are by far the best part of the movie and they're written really well. Most of the laughs come from their personalities and interactions, so you have to see the lines and scenes in that context. Most of the movie isn't just a bunch of zippy one-liners that can rattled off by anyone. And if you think about it, the original movie is the same way. Most of Bill Murray's lines wouldn't be funny coming from someone else. I'm a major Ghostbusters fan and I am so baffled that other fans decided to hate this movie before it even came out. It's a Ghostbusters movie, much, much closer to the original than I thought it would be (and for the record, light years better than Ghostbusters II, and I like Ghostbusters II). If you're a fan and not someone who just thought the original was fine, this is the movie for you. So to all of the "you're ruining my childhood" whiners: put down the freaking PlayStation controller, stumble out of your mom's basement, quit feeling sorry that you're a twenty-five year old virgin whose only joy is from harassing women on Twitter, and go to the movie! It's great!
This is so foreign to me I'm not sure where to begin. She's my favorite part of SNL so I'll tell you now if you don't like her, you probably won't like the movie. And hey, that's cool. But it's like someone telling me they don't like pizza, ice cream, or sex. I comprehend the words, but they don't compute
I do like Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon and Jones. That said, I do not like 'Bridesmaids' - found it to be incredibly gross.
If they're 25, it couldn't be ruining their childhood. When the original came out, they were negative 7 years old. ;-)
I was a huge Ghostbusters fan growing up so there was no way I'd be avoiding this. I've now seen it twice and wouldn't be against going again. My review would be eerily similar to ecdc's above. I laughed from start to finish. The characters are brilliantly written and their relationship is the movie's strongest asset. Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) is brilliant and steals every scene. This is nothing like Bridesmaids IMHO. The pacing is a little iffy and it needed a better bad guy, but all in all instead of feeling like this has ruined my childhood it's reawoken a part of it that I've missed. I truly hope we get more!!!
I have not seen it yet. My daughter (who grew up with Ghostbusters) did and told me it was hysterical. Her husband, who was determined to hate it, "nearly peed his pants!" So I guess I will have to check it out.
Me too! Unlike Ghostbusters II, which was such an obvious cash grab that Bill Murray barely stayed awake for, I feel like this set us up for a couple of potentially great sequels.
It's going to be tough, so far it's only grossed 179 million worldwide on a 144 million production budget. Ghostbusters (2016) (2016) - Box Office Mojo
