So I'm checking out flights for my January trip. As Travelocity is loading my search results I notice some extremely expensive flights. Once the full results load I scroll down to the most expensive flight. $2,107.90 for a flight from Salt Lake City to Long Beach with stops in Phoenix and LA that takes over 16 hours and involves multiple airlines. Me. I'm going with the flight that costs $154.20 for a non stop that takes 1 hour and 47 minutes. Seriously who is even offering that ridiculousness. And who in their right mind would buy it.
I always wonder about things like that. Certainly there are occasions where a more expensive flight is at a better time or has some other feature, but I can't imagine why the terribly long flight would cost so much; why bother even listing it? Some people are loyal-to-a-fault with certain airlines and rarely comparison shop (my mom does that with Delta), but I can't imagine anybody paying that much for a flight like that I'm not even sure why that showed up in the searches. I know Southwest in particular does a good job of policing their connections, making it so certain routes are unsearchable, even though they would technically be possible with multiple transfers. I'm no expert, but I imagine you'd be able to drive from SLC to Long Beach in about 16 hours, and it would certainly cost less than $2,100, even if you hired a personal chauffeur to do the driving. Plus you'd avoid the hassles of air travel!
Absolutely. It's about a 10 hour drive. You can easily do it in one day. It is generally cheaper to drive if there are at least two people going. Sometimes if gas is cheap enough it is cheaper even for one.
