It's neat to see how many layers of rockwork they're doing. In addition to the big wall of rock, there are several bits and pieces on the edge of the building, which will stick up in the distance. I'm also surprised how much space there is between the rock wall and the building on the side closest to the camera; it seems like there's practically enough room for another attraction in there

There’s news coming from the world of Pandora.

As most of us are patiently twiddling our thumbs waiting for Disney to open its Star Wars lands, James Cameron’s Avatar is going to beat it into the parks. Pandora: The World of Avatar will open in 2017 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida and io9 can exclusively reveal that Cameron himself, along with his producer Jon Landau and Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde, will be on hand at the upcoming D23 Destination D event in November to reveal brand new details about the 12-acre immersive theme park section.

These photos were posted to Twitter on Friday. Looks like it's definitely coming along, but most of the progress from here on out will be tough to decipher

Avatar is only 10 acres; Star Wars is supposed to be 14 acres (both with only 2 rides in all that space). Judging strictly on side, Star Wars would seem to have the upper hand

When is Pandora supposed to open? It's next year in the spring?

I think that's their goal. Depending how construction goes, it could be ready as early as late spring, or as late as mid-fall.

The bridge sure seems to fit the general design aesthetic of the park. I was worried that a land based on a fantasy movie would stick out like a sore thumb, but it's looking pretty promising so far

Rumors have suggested they're looking at a late-spring opening, so this will give them some wiggle room in case they encounter any delays along the way

I still don't know what to expect, but I'm getting more and more excited about the land, because of the rumours that Avatarland's boat ride will use the same technology like SDL's POTC ride.

Since Joe Rohde was heavily involved I never feared any design problems. He seems to care so much about DAK.

Joe Rhode is also in charge of the Marvel work, and DCA's TOT doesn't seem overly promising. I agree that his projects for DAK have looked great, but many have other problems (silly storylines, too short, etc). We'll see if Avatar falls into those traps too

It's great to see some of the details, like plants, being installed and getting some on-the-ground views of the land. Regardless of the staying power of the IP behind it or the appropriateness for the park, it sure looks like it will be an impressive area to experience in person

WDW Magic also recently posted some aerial photos showing the scale of the project:

Interesting. I think there's a quick shot of the scenery on the boat ride, but it looks like it's CGI. Considering the source material, I'm not sure of that's a good thing or a bad thing

Well it gives us west coast people a reason to visit DAK for a half day. There is still no reason for us to visit DHS at all.
