Well, I've got myself a 12 hour layover in Hong Kong (6am to 6pm), and I'm looking for suggestions. Obviously Disneyland is a possibility, but I might just go with Victoria Peak/Kowloon for the limited time available. Suggestions and advice? Any thoughts on a good restaurant (not too pricy though) for a nice Chinese lunch would also be great.
HKDL or the giant Buddha statue would probably be the easiest options, since you wouldn't have to leave Lantau Island, but it's so easy to get in and out of the city on MTR that it would be quite easy to do as well If you're looking for a Chinese restaurant, I seem to recall that Kowloon had better options than Central (which was more international fare), but it's been long enough that I don't remember any specific locations
Yes, there seems to be an easy airport express at a reasonable price, so the Peak and Kowloon seem like viable options (perhaps even in addition to Disney, since we arrive so bloody early lol). Regarding MTR, is is as reliable at Japan? Could I time the return to the minute, or should I build in an extra thirty minutes or an hour? (I'm figuring on being back at the airport 2 hours before the flight with no bags to check)
As crazy as it sounds, I think MTR might actually be more reliable than the trains in Japan. For many years running, they've posted on-time performance ratings over 99%, which is just crazy http://www.mtr.com.hk/en/customer/main/performance_201407.html I'm a regular commuter on the DC Metro, and MTR is what is often cited as "what could be" for a system like ours, if/when we get a major shake up. It's a privately-operated system with cheap fares, great maintenance, good worker wagers, and top-notch performance. Meanwhile, I spent an extra 40 minutes stopped in tunnels this morning and nobody batted an eye, while the system is speeding up the death spiral *sigh*
