For whatever it's worth ... One of the more obscure animated features from last year's Oscar-eligible list had a one-time screening at theaters across the country today (one of those Fathom Events dealies) and I thought I'd pop in and tell you what I thought, since it will no doubt be showing up on DVD, Blu Ray, and assorted online venues any second now. It's a French flick about a strange world where they appoint Guardians of the Sun and of the Moon. And of course, the mystical creature in charge of such things gives the moon gig to an unexpected and totally unprepared little runt of a guy who makes a big mess of things. (Did anybody see Kung Fu Panda? These guys sure did!) A bad guy is thus able to steal the sun and extinguish it because why not, and the new Guardian guys (and their adorable spunky female sidekick, who is made of wax and has to avoid getting too hot (she melts) or too cold (she freezes)), have to go save the day. It's visually sumptuous and quite creative - at least when it comes to settings and character design and such, but the script is so head-deskingly trite and formulaic that you will be able to predict literally everything that happens just based on the first few minutes of exposition. It's THAT bad. Thus, I can't even recommend it. Sorry, GKids. I haven't felt the urge to see a mainstream one in quite some time. Congratulations, Pixar. You finally officially lost me.
Referring to the "mainstream" part, that. Obviously Mune has nothing to do with Pixar. But Cars 3 (which I have zero interest in seeing) does.
