WDWNT is reporting that the SDL attraction might be coming to the Magic Kingdom. It is rumoured that it will replace the Tomorrowland Speedway. CONFIRMED: TRON Lightcycle Power Run Rollercoaster to Replace Tomorrowland Speedway at the Magic Kingdom - WDW News Today An announcement is expected during the D23 Expo.
A trusted insider on the WDW Magic boards is saying that it will actually be located outside the berm behind the Speedway. There will be some minor modifications to the railroad and a major overhaul/retheme of the Speedway, but both will remain. It will be interesting to see how this does right next to Space Mountain, since it essentially serves the same purpose; WDW's Space has been in terrible condition for years, and this is only going to make it look worse I'm also interested to see what else gets announced at the Expo. There have been so many crazy-sounding rumors lately that have turned out to be true, that I'm sure we'll get some interesting ones. Plus there are a ton of all-but-announced projects that I expect to become official too. It will be an exciting year for Parks & Resorts news!
I hope that you are correct. When I saw the satlight pictures of the area which suggest that they were going to put TRON on the same spot as the Speedway it seemed like such a waste of space when it could easily fit behind the berm. It is going to be odd to have two coasters right next to each other, TRON and Space Mountain.
WDW's Space Mountain needs an upgrade. I can't imagine that Disney woud remove such an icon, so maybe after Tron opens SM gets a coaster worth the name.
If I were upgrading Space Mountain in the future, I would put in another ride to suck up the guests while Space Mountain is down. But TDO isn't that smart.
It's official! Tron is coming to WDW. I wish that ride would come to DLP as well. It looks like the Speedway is staying too, at least according to the concept art. New Tron Attraction Coming to Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort
There are rumors from reliable sources that the Speedway will get extensive changes, and will also have a Tron theme. I'm surprised the concept art shows the arcade/store building at the Space Mountain exit remaining; it was added in the 90's, and seems like it will block traffic to the new attraction, so it could/should be easy to remove
I rode Tron Lightcycle Run at Shanghai Disney. It is unbelievably amazing. It's so good, I wish there was a way to make it's movie series work.
What did you think about the ride length? I know it's short (about a minute of actual ride time), but it's hard to get a lengthy coaster, especially one that's on the thrilling side. I always feel like Rockin' Rollercoaster is too short, but Tron seems to have a lot more meat to it, even if it's just a few seconds longer
Riders have to sit in such an unusual posture, I think it might give people neck or back aches if it were any longer, or if it had loops. There's definitely a "learning curve" to know how to mount the cycles. A very smooth ride though. You should see the handicap-accessible car. It reminds me of Herbie!
Disney's Tron coaster isn't exactly new or original. Heck even Knott's Pony Express has been around longer than Disney's ride.
Still no answer on the jet-walls? Seems to me that somebody's bound to get derez'd. (And something tells me that the "adrenaline-pumping music" in the Shanghai description probably owes far more to Daft Punk and/or Journey than it does to Wendy Carlos. Especially given that her "light cycles" cue was discarded in favor of pure sound effects, eventually becoming the basis for a movement of her Moonscapes suite for digitally-simulated orchestra. Pity.)
