I've been curious about this one. I'm so in love with the original, I'm not sure if I could let go of that and embrace this film independently no matter how good it may be. And the music, of course....The comparison to the Sherman bros would be impossible.
I think that's where I ran into issues also. The songs definitely weren't Sherman bros which doesn't automatically make the songs bad, but it made them so my brain wouldn't wrap around the lyrics appropriately. Miranda did a wonderful job with the music for Moana, so I had high hopes for more incredible music...maybe I went in with too much optimism. The other issue I had were the kids in the movie weren't that great either. Definitely not Jane and Michael Banks quality...even though they were Michael's children. What I would've loved is if the gal who played Jane Banks in the original could've made an appearance...or even had Julie Andrews as the balloon lady instead of Angela Lansbury (who did a wonderful job) at the end of the movie.
How to Train Your Dragon : Hidden World Netflix - at home on the couch with Kricket. I really enjoyed this movie series. I love the characters (human AND dragon), and I was a big blubbery mess at the end of the movie. Steve walked through the room during one of the teary moments, and he just looked at me and shook his head. LOL!
Edwards and Stone's 1776, of course. From the 2002 DVD, with the suppressed (and for many years, presumed destroyed) "Cool, Considerate Men" production number restored.
Us - Netflix DVD - On the sofa with Kricket with the lights off. I was honestly hoping for more from this movie. I enjoy scary/horror/thriller type movies very much, and I did like Peele's "Get Out" a couple of years ago. It just wasn't scary to me at all...a little creepy, but no real jump scares or anything like that. I did appreciate the homages he had to various movies like little easter eggs throughout. It was worth watching, but I don't need to see it again.
I most recently saw the first three Men in Black movies. The last one last night. I'd forgotten that the Apollo 11 launch figured prominently in the plot of the third one.
Tuesday night, after the Hollywood Bowl concert, because I always think of it whenever I hear Beethoven's Egmont Overture, I saw an award-winning 1965 Hungarian short subject. In English, the title is Overture. Not bad, even on my cell phone's tiny screen. (Speaking of Hungary, by pure coincidence, Tuesday evening's concert featured the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Along with Nicola Benedetti, for the Bruch Concerto.)
It’s about a young rock climber named Tommy Caldwell who free climbed the Dawn Wall of El Capitan in Yosemite. Took years of preparation to map the climb, and his whole life from 6 years old he has had an amazing ability and passion to climb, overcoming all sorts of obstacles.
Mortal Engines : On the sofa with Steve, Kricket, and Jaeger. I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I anticipated. I went into the movie thinking Guillermo Del Toro had a hand in it, but it was actually Peter Jackson. It was a visually stunning and imaginative movie which was refreshing considering all of the remakes that have been coming out. Definitely worth a watch on the sofa with loved ones (and maybe a glass of wine...or two).
KING KONG (1933) VHS released as "New Archival Version" sometime in the 80's I believe. It includes censored footage. I do not know how many times we have watched this but we never fail to marvel at the *technology*. Beats the Hell out of CGI in my book.
Dark Crystal : Age of Resistance (Netflix series) : Watching the first of the series instantaneously brought up some serious nostalgia in my heart. I remembered watching the movie in the theatre with my dad when I was a kid, and being enthralled with this magical place and Gelflings, Skeksis, and Mystics. The "muppets" have evolved a bit because there are multiple races of Gelflings and the Skeksis are AMAZING!!! There is a bit more CGI than I would like, but I understand why some of it is there. Their sets are visually stunning, and I found myself pausing things more than once to check out the little details. It's worth a watch of at least the first one if you haven't seen the movie, but if you've seen the movie I think you're going to like the prequel.
It : Chapter 2 - AMC movie parlor theatre = It was a surprisingly fun movie, and it clocks in at around 2.5 hours (which is amazing for any type of horror movie). They did a great job casting the adult Losers Club, and I enjoyed Stephen King's cameo. Bill Skarsgaard continues with a insanely creepy Pennywise...one should not compare Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise in this instance simply due to the special effects that were available for the TV version. Definitely worth a watch if you've read the book or saw the first chapter of the movie.
The Gate, Amazon, 80's demon's in a hole in the back yard. We watched it because my daughter took the girls to dance and that is the only time we get to watch terrible horror movies with our grandson and son-in-law. It was very 80's. (The SIL said it scared the out of him when he was a kid.)
I remember watching that movie as a kid along with House. I believe it had William Katt (The Greatest American Hero) in it.
@Marlin Perkins what did you think of it? I have it in my Netflix queue. I was home sick from work on Friday so I watched Disney's Nutcracker and the Four Realms on Netflix in between my naps. I thought the movie was visually stunning and I loved the costuming, but the plot was dull and predictable. It was an okay movie to watch, and not a waste of time. I also started watching Marianne on Netflix. Creepy ghost story type of series. I want to say that it is originally French, so it is dubbed. I must say that Europe gets away with a lot more stuff on TV than we do here...with the exception being American Horror Story...LOL! The basic plot is an author has finished a series of books regarding Marianne (a witch), and killed off her main character. Marianne doesn't like that too much and starts wreaking havoc to get the author to start writing again. Decent creep factor to it, but not scary...at least not to me.
