You have to buy a one-day ticket, and then the remaining balance of the AP cost is spread out over 12 months. The limitations are that you must be a resident of Southern CA, and the AP is only good on 176 off-peak weekdays...so no holidays, weekends, or peak periods such as spring break or Christmas week.
