Really? As change for purchases made in cash? I would have thought this might violate some sort of federal currency law.

City Hall and Guest Relations change Disney Dollars back into U.S. cash. Many locations may not have the cash on hand to change Disney Dollars back depending on the amount so Guests with Disney Dollars to exchange are generally referred to one of the main locations for purchase. Also, theoretically if your original Disney Dollar purchase was made on a credit card and you trade them back, Disneyland is supposed to credit the amount back to your card. This is because there is no cash advance fee involved with purchasing Disney Dollars. They're just like merchandise. So if you purchase Disney Dollars on your credit card and then turn around and change it for U.S. currency then theoretically you're getting a cash advance without the cash advance fee.

There's no way to know, you're right. So yes, it's a way for Guests to get a cash advance with no fee. However, if the Guest offers the information about the credit card purchase the Resort is obligated to attempt to credit the credit card back. Of course I've had it happen where the Guest who did not want the Disney Dollars credited back just walked out and went to several different locations to cash out their Disney Dollars. You're absolutely correct, there's no way to know. Honor system, people... I will say that very few Guests purchase a significant amount of Disney Dollars so that makes it almost a non-issue. Most people purchase some incidental DD as souvenirs or pocket money for the day.

I think it's a great concept but seems like people aren't aware of them much.
