Basically if they have an expiration date you have to wait until the earlier of being spent and expiration and if they have no expiration date then you need to estimate the likelihood of being cashed over time and release the deferred revenue under the same profile. Most companies will have released all of the revenue within 2-3 years of issuance. I'm off to put a cold towel on my head - answering that took me back to my days at Andersen advising the likes of WorldCom, Global Crossing and Enron!
