While I'm sure there will be a ton of comparisons between the two, I can only hope that the TV mini-series helped spark the interests of people who wouldn't have otherwise been interested in seeing a nature documentary in theaters (like myself). If they do a really good job with this (and I really do have faith in them on this one), then I see it being a very profitable branch to the Disney company. It's kind of interesting to see that Disney is sort of becoming cutting-edge in the entertainment industry, when it comes to the environment and such. This will definately have a huge impact on the public's view of Disney's interests in the enviroment, which is great. I've also noticed over the last few months a huge increase in "environmentally friendly" products in the theme parks (reusable bags, shirts from recycled materials, etc), along with the Environmentality stuff they started about a decade ago. And with the recent rumblings about possible plans for the entire company to 'go green', they could definately become an industry leader and innovator again. I'm not sure if all these things are connected, but if they are, then Disney definately has the possibility to open itself up to a whole new market.

I really loved the song in the trailer too, the HoppĂpolla piece.

Originally Posted By Kar2oonMan >>Why don't they just plant the trees anyway?<< LOL, that is a really great question. We've gotten into this "Buy it or the puppy gets it!" hostage negotiation over doing good work, haven't we? Mawnck is right -- just plant the trees. Plant them and let people know they did it and move on to the next thing. Or better yet, have a way for people who have just seen the movie to donate money on the way out of the theater if they'd like. If the film is powerful, people will want to DO something, and funds could go to reforestation projects right when people have spent a couple hours learning about why it matters.

Why can't they use this as a promotion? It's like when a church constructs a building. People say, "Can't that money go to feed the poor? " The answer: NO - because that church likely already does a TON to feed the poor, and they can also build to honor God and provide useful buildings for the members of the church. I applaud Disney for planting the trees. They didn't even have to do it in the first place, and they are going to.

I stand by my point that Disney's tree planting gimmick is a positive thing that should be applauded, not criticized. They don't have to plant a dang thing, yet they are going to do it anyway.

That's the spirit in which my post was made, Kar2oonMan.

But there's a big difference between genuine charity and a promotional gimmick disguised as charity. There's no altruistic intent in this tree-planting thing. None. It's a publicity stunt to draw attention to their movie ... one that won't cost them a thing if it doesn't work.
