Plus, I haven't seen a single ad for it. I had no idea until I read the review this morning that the thing even existed. Their promotion budget must be miniscule.

    Not usually a good sign.

I don't know why I haven't seen any ads. I'd say I'm watching the wrong channels, but I saw TONS of ads for Frozen, DM2, MU, and even for the likes of Croods.

Not much for Turbo, though. Maybe I watch the channels of the "we know it's going to bomb, so although we're obligated to spend x-amount of dollars on promo, we're not wasting our money on ALL the channels" variety. :)

Once again ... you just can't help yourself but to throw it back again, and think I'm over-reacting.

Lets go back in time .... when you kindly wrote me all kinds of letters with all sorts of Disney Character stuff. Which I thought was nice. Really nice, thoughtful, sweet. So lets remember R, you have a love of Disney characters that runs so far ... you get defensive about it. And you sometimes forget Disneyland was not built largely on the Disney characters but on original content.

So do me favor, and look at yourself .. and with your Witches moniker. You're so deep into your love of characters ... you write in a three party female witch format everytime.

For once, I would like you to write directly .. instead of through Black Cauldren characters.

So lets call a spade a spade who's a "tad" over reacting.

    Old friend.

And if you keep this up... I'm going to call you by your real name... because at that point .. I'm just not going to care anymore ... because you are starting to go over board with this.

Pull yourself out a bit, please. And get some perspective.

I'm impressed at how much (although obviously not universal) good will there is for this movie. It really does seem like there's a good chunk of people rooting for it. That seems unusual for Disney in recent years.

Also thought it was interesting that Disney put the couple big music moments from the movie online. Not sure if that's a new marketing strategy or if it's just a result of being confident in the product.

I understand the character fatigue though. I just saw the news that there's a new Toy Story special in the works and I was surprised at my own reaction.

I was also surprised by this. On my flight yesterday, there was a little girl across the aisle who was watching a Tink movie on an iPad. Once that finished up, she seemed to have Do You Want To Build A Snowman and Let It Go on an endless loop for the next ~45 minutes before we landed. Clearly it's popular, but I can't help but think that it could be stopping some people from re-watching it in the theaters (then again, it could be convincing some to go see it for the first time...in forever)

The video clips might sway those who want to go, it also likely reinforces the connection for the serious fans and reminds them why they want to see it again. I know when I really, really like a movie I usually try to find something to feed my habit between viewings.

I think the YouTube release of some of the musical numbers from "Frozen" might be kind of a modern version of this same thing. I also suspect Disney figured that the scenes were going to end up online anyway and that it probably made more sense to make sure there were good quality, official copies out there instead of trying to play a "Whack-a-mole" game of take-down requests.

And yet they did everything in their power to make it look like Frozen (and Tangled too, for that matter) wasn't a musical. Because, you know, musicals aren't popular and nobody wants to see one... Disney's marketing people are seriously the worst

Guilty, but just barely. The Lion King was the first film I saw in theaters, in a packed house. We had to sit in the front row, and I had to sit on my mom's lap. It definitely made the opening sunrise shot even more dramatic

Man, remember when that was Disney's thing for a while? It was great. When they put Lion King back in theaters for the winter, they put the entire "Colors of the Wind" sequence in front of it. I was in a packed theater where people clapped when it ended. I remember Disney also did that for "Zero to Hero" from Hercules as well as the entire opening sequence of Dinosaur.

" I also suspect Disney figured that the scenes were going to end up online anyway"

That has to play a major part too. Comedy Central finally figured out it made more sense to put The Daily Show and South Park on their site for free - no paying lawyers and it drives people to your website.

But still, the net gain must be that it ultimately drives attendance. My kids flipped out when "In Summer" came on the Disney Channel a few weeks ago. And trust me, it did nothing to make them think that now they didn't need a Frozen fix.

"And yet they did everything in their power to make it look like Frozen (and Tangled too, for that matter) wasn't a musical."

But what is Disney to do? With Princess and the Frog, they marketed the thing as a throwback to the princess musical movies from 20 years ago, with teasers that went straight into a Disney princess singing. And all of the later trailers stressed that it was a great big musical. And it barely made 100 million.

So they take Frozen, which really IS a throwback to 90s Disney princess musicals, erase princesses from all marketing, and the thing sails to 350 million. People, I guess, will say that Frozen was better, but "being good" or "being bad" is sometimes an unfair indicator as to how much money a thing makes.

The question is whether Disney will stick to this trend, or go all out and market the next musical as an actual musical to cash in on Frozen's success. I just get the idea that 8-year old boys are driving box office attendance. And running studios.

There are several different markets for their movies. Some want to see a musical, some don't (or THINK they don't). The latter far outnumbers the former. But they marketed to both groups.

At this point, anybody who complains about the marketing of Frozen is being ninth-circle-of-silly. The success of a marketing campaign is measured by the success of that which is being marketed. BY DEFINITION, the marketing of Frozen was flawless, whether you or I liked it or not.

Just a guess here: They're going to market it EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. Why mess with success?

Although not a musical section (obviously), they also put the entire 8-10 minute opening of Dinosaur in front of Toy Story 2's release in 1999. Just like the Circle of Life opening from Lion King. So yes, they did things like that more than once or twice.

I'd say they've found their YouTube era equivalent. When you have a quality product to sell, it works.
