I would easily put Frozen above Tangled and Princess and the Frog. Tangled, especially, suffered for trying to recreate the feeling and tone of a typical princess movie, while Frozen is much more ambitious. I already wrote a review on Tumblr last night, so I won't rehash it here, but I would say Disney is doing better than Pixar right now, with Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen being much stronger films than Brave, Cars 2 or Monsters University.

It is on track to be the highest grossing Thanksgiving 5-day opening since Toy Story 2 in 1999. HUGE win for WDAS.

Watching the box office has been fun. It's running ahead of Tangled by a nice amount, and is set to be a big fat hit. Here was the latest from Forbes:

"The film’s three-day total is now $53.4m, which by the way is higher than any Fri-Sun Disney animated opening ever, ahead of the $49m Fri-Sun debuts of Wreck It Ralph and Tangled respectively. The question now isn’t whether Frozen will be the first non-Pixar Disney animated feature to debut with $50m+ over Fri-Sun (done), but whether it will be the first to debut with $60m+ (probably) or $65m+ (possibly).

Either way, Frozen is about to best the $80m five-day Thanksgiving debut record of Toy Story 2 from back in 1999, with a likely five-day finish of $90m."

I really want this movie to get the appreciation it deserves.

We're headed to the Disney Store today to find an Olaf for our snowman collection. :)

Everybody's pretty much right. It's FANTASTIC. Best mainstream movie of the year by a country mile. If you're planning to not see it in the theater for any reason, just forget it and GO. 3D recommended.

I am still not a big fan of Olaf - he adds nothing to the movie, and is obviously there for the sole purpose of selling plushies - but he isn't overused in the movie like he is in the promo campaign.

Note to ad campaign haters (including myself) … If the box office returns are any indication, the movie IS getting the appreciation it deserves. We're going to get princessed to death in the coming years I betcha, by Disney and everybody else.

Any resemblance to the Hans Christian Andersen story is absolutely, positively undetectable. I don't even know why they bothered listing it in the credits.

Hot (tee-hee) tip for those who haven't seen it (or are going to again): There's an amusing little scene after the credits. There's also a pretty hilarious joke disclaimer IN the credits toward the end. Watch for it. (Sorry, I can't describe it without spoiling something else in the movie.)

Especially for the Mickey short that precedes it. Very clever use of 3D.

So all our popcorn was on the floor from jumping out of my seat and I missed the ending. Guess I will have to give Disney more money to go see it in the theatre again…After I take a CPR class like all good grandmothers should.

    LOVED FROZEN!!!

    (1) The "throwback" animation just doesn't look or sound vintage. The style and pacing are completely wrong for the era - sort of a mish-mash of several styles - and most of the gags are VERY 2013. In particular, they clearly hadn't thought much about the difference between a funny 1928 gag and a random act of extreme violence. There WAS a line, at least at Disney, and this cartoon obviously had no clue where it was. And the "old" soundtrack, especially the music, just screamed "digital".

    (2) It doesn't "read" well. You have all this frantic action going on in a fixed wide shot, and they didn't do a good job of telling the audience where to look. It's more of an image onslaught than a genuine gag cartoon.

I've now seen the short twice, and didn't care for it either time. Loved the concept, but the execution was lacking. (Disclaimer: I never liked Roger Rabbit very much either.) :p

    >>Does anyone know what the front runner for the Best Short Oscar is currently?<<

Since it's the Academy members at large that vote in the category, not the animation nuts, probably "Get a Horse", just on name recognition. Especially now that the Pixar short, "Blue Umbrella", didn't make the short list cut and is out of the running for a nomination. This category is full of surprises though.

Best Animated Feature? A toss-up. Your deserving nominees as of this date are The Wind Rises, Frozen, Ernest and Celestine, Monsters University, and (I guess) The Croods. I predict one of the first two gets the statue, but I have NO idea which one. Depends on which one offends more Academy members I suppose.

(Memo to Madoka Magica fans: NO!)

My other problem was with the trailer. SPOILER ALERT - the entire scene with Olaf losing his nose and both he and the reindeer going for it is nowhere in the movie. It was a funny moment, but if it wasn't in the movie it shouldn't have been used for a trailer!

But other than those 2 small things, great movie. And sorry, mawnck, but once again I completely disagree with you - I thought the short was terrific.

A lot of people disagree with me. I'll live.

Unless the Madoka Magica fans catch me, because most of them are armed.

mawnck, I was wondering what you'd think of it - relieved to hear you enjoyed it. I'm still seeing enough comments elsewhere that it's a "Tangled-clone" or "predictable Disney fluff" or that the music didn't advance the plot - doesn't sound like the movie I saw at all.

We loved Olaf, and I feel he does serve a purpose in making things clearer to the younger viewers, and maybe to the other characters as well. There's other reasons I like him too, but I don't want to spoil anything. Anyway, he deserves a spot in the movie just for his song alone. :) *smiles at plushie on shelf*

I enjoyed the short a lot but your criticism rings true. I guess I'm just sucked in by the fact that Disney did it at all.

danayoung, the troll song was easily my least favourite bit in the movie too. But there's been some horrible villain and sidekick songs in the past - I thought this song was still decent, just not up to the rest of the movie.

Saw a lot of lovely little details that I missed the first time around, including the easter egg above. You gotta be pretty fast for that one.
