Really? I didn't like it as much. While there were things that I thought were great and fit really well (like the people dressed as Madonna's various incarnations through the years walking the hallways), I thought that overall it felt a little forced and the songs were awkwardly built up.

The two cheerleader songs (the one near the beginning with the stilts and 4 Minutes at the end with Mercedes, Kurt, and the marching band) seemed like they were thrown in just to have more songs. They didn't really add much to the progression of the story. While the original part of the series had a few throwaway songs, there seem to be a lot more of them in the last two episodes than before. By confining everything to Madonna, it seemed to restrict them too much to really get a good plot out otherwise.

And then there was Like a Virgin. While the song was well done and fit in with the story line, I'm not entirely sure that it was appropriate for the show's plot or target audience. As a room full of college students, my friends and I felt uncomfortable watching it; I can just imagine a parent watching it with their kids. While I'm glad that it was partially resolved with Rachael/Jesse and Will/Emma not doing anything, it just seemed like the whole thing subject was a little questionable. However, I will admit that I liked how they were able to integrate the song into the plot, and have a plot that had so many (too many?) parallels between the various characters.

Another thing about that part that kind of bugged me is how they keep talking about Emma's "problems". While it originally seemed to imply her ODCness, it now seems to also include her desire to keep her legs closed. I'm not really sure that's the best message to be sending, but I do think it's a little humorous that they're sending the guidance counselor to see a guidance counselor.

The overall nature of the episode didn't really progress the story arc too much, which was a little disappointing. I figured that would happen as soon as they decided to play her over the PA system, but it didn't lead to as many great moments as I was hoping for. There were still plenty of good ones, but not as many standout ones as I had hoped.

I would also like to see more out-of-school stuff with the kids and their families. I think that the best parts of the older episodes was getting to see Kurt, Quin and Finn at home, interacting with their parents. That allowed to make them seem a little more human. I'd also like to see some more of the other things going on at school (what happened to the Celebacy Club? And was Santana really in it?). They hinted at bringing back Becky and Sue's sister for another subplot along the way, but they didn't do anything of any substance with it. Maybe that's something to come later. And how much longer until Quin starts to show her baby bump?

I did hear a rumor/spoiler from a friend about something coming up later in the season, but I'll put that in another post so you can skip over it if you want.

As for the pep rally scene, my friends were excited to be on the show, but a little disappointed how short the song was. They spent 2 full days rehearsing/learning the show and another full day filming, and it ended up being a very minor scene that didn't really seem to make any sense in the plot of the show. One of my roommates is in the little band in the music room in a later episode so it will be fun to look out for him there.

Apparently Rachael's biological mother is Idina Menzel's character. While I'm not sure how reliable my friend's source was (internet), the clues definitely seem to be there. There's also a good episode or two (or more) that could be played out of that relationship and finding out and all that.

Jane Lynch is still great and I may watch for her, but it's starting to wear on me somehow.

(Certainly it can't help that I'm not a Madonna fan, but even so...)

The storyline is advancing nicely, and there's still plenty of things to be resolved (like Kurt and Finn, but I think he'll end up making friends with Finn's mom). It's great to get to see a little more of where the characters come from, as that always adds depth.

I also like how they're using Quinn to be a sort of maternal figure. She always just happens to pop up in the right place at the right time, with the right things to say. I'm not sure where she's living now (since I doubt she's still at Finn's), but she's definitely becoming wiser. I really liked the not-so-subtle message they worked in with the cheerleaders, and I'll be interested to see what happens when Sue has to live up to her new reputation.

I really enjoyed seeing Sue's sister get some more screen time, but I'm not sure how I like the idea of Sue being nice to everybody. Granted, she will probably change her attitude back next week, but it just doesn't feel right. What made her relationship with her sister so special is that she was the only person that Sue was ever nice to. It just gave her another layer that nobody was expecting. Having her be nice to everybody is just weird.

And it was also kind of fun to see Sandy, the original glee club director who got fired at the beginning of the first episode, come back for a brief cameo. He was playing Rachel's dad in Total Eclipse of the Heart, which makes me think that he might be one of her dads. I don't remember how they interacted in the earlier episodes, but it kind of works with the Idina Menzel theory from earlier.

Most of the songs were pretty forgetable, both with the performances and the songs themselves, but Total Eclipse of the Heart really worked well for me. The video seemed a little forced, but it was nice to see that they worked it into the plot. The song itself was really well performed, and I think I would put it on par with the original. I did have the 'literal music video' from Youtube stuck in my head the whole time, but it was well done anyway.

I also liked how they managed to make the songs work without having them all be performances. I'm really sad that I missed the song with Rachel near the end, since my dad decided that he needed to talk to me right then, but it sounded pretty good from what I could hear. The songs showed a lot of variety, and still fit perfectly.

I'm also glad that we're getting a chance to see some of the other characters' stories. It was good to catch back up with Arty and Tina, and to see Ms Pillsbury again. There was a quick mention of Terry, but nothing about what she's up to. I'd kind of like to know about what happened to her, as well as Coach Tanaka.

And I'm really looking forward to next week's theme: Lady Gaga. It might feel a little forced, like the Madonna episode, but it looks like the general rediculousness will make it work.

I was surprised that there were only two Lady Gaga songs (though I don't know what other ones they would have used), but the music all seemed to work really well. I especially liked Poker Face as a ballad. It was a great sounding song, and added a lot of meaning to both the song and the scene, which is an impressive feat.

And quote of the night: "It's not enough to douse yourself in gasoline. You have to light yourself on fire to make it work."

The Kurt's Dad and Finn talk was very moving...loved that he was kicked out though. Over all very good episode, but next week...we have Will romancing Sue...LOL

I concede that when she tries to justify herself by performing her songs as ballads, the lyrics don't always hold up. ("GaGa, ooh la la!")

    ACT II:

In which I point out the obvious... Almost every single character on Glee is a walking one-dimensional stereotype. GayBoi. GhettoGirl. Asian Geek. Slut. DramaQueen Streisand-WannaBe. Bitch. Nerd. Jock. Gimme a break here. Could they have created a more cardboard-character cast?!

    ACT III:

    In which I say...

Damn! The writers have done it again!!!

Forcing a comparison between the (dance/gay) Lady Gaga and the ("rock"/straight) Kiss was an absolute stroke of genious.

And even using only two Gaga songs tonight, they managed to convey the Gaga message.

AND... they managed to craft a situation in which even "Poker Face" worked as a ballad.

I continue to be amazed at how this show manages to be so lowest-common-denominator and so incredibly well-crafted at the same time.
