Lea Michele did a fabulous performance of Kiss Today Goodbye (one of my favorite show tunes). After a summer break I almost forgot how mean Sue Sylvester can be. She still made me laugh though. Looking forward to Britney mania next week!

It was pretty good, and I like the way the big conflicts for the season seem to be headed. I was worried that Sue and Will would be friends, but I'm happy to see that it was just a temporary thing. I really like the Coach Bieste character, and there's a lot they can do with her. Coach Tanaka's story had been told part way through last season (interesting that there was no mention of Emma in this episode), so I'm fine with him being replaced. It's pretty clear that the budget for this season is a lot bigger than in the past. They all seem to have fancy stylish haircuts and nicer clothes. There are a ton more extras walking around (including past the little window in the classroom door in the background of scenes), which just adds to it. The school they were in seemed a little different, especially during the song at the beginning, where they were clearly in California and not Ohio. I thought it was strange that they didn't manage to have any graduates or freshmen with the new season. They got rid of one of the throwaway characters by saying that he transferred, and got two new ones via a transfer and foreign exchange. It's interesting that both the quarterback and head cheerleader were apparently juniors last year, and still have (at least) another year left in high school. It just seemed like sloppy wiriting, when they could have done it the way it actually happens in schools quite easily. I also thought that using "Getting to Know You" in the Asian camp scene was really funny. It was a complete throwaway scene, but it made me laugh. In general, they seemed to do a pretty good job of having a lot of variety of music in the episode, so it worked pretty well. And what ever happened to the guy who played piano for them (I think his name is Phil?)? He was fun background character, so I hope he's not gone permanently. It was kind of clever how they kept him silent the entire season. "I just didn't trust her after she sent me to a crack house."

I see where the songs they performed are already in the Top Songs on iTunes. Wow. Can't wait for next week's Britany episode, too!

Until then, that story line felt as though they had written totally out of character for her.

And while all of the songs were extremely well done (I can't think of an episode that did as consistantly well), it was a little disappointing that all but the final two were dream sequences (and one of the other two was a pure performance) that didn't progress the story at all. That's part of what makes the songs so neat, since they tend to highlight different things that you're used to. These songs were very well done, but they felt kind of irrelevant from a story standpoint. It was nice to see Brittany (S Pierce) have a featured song. She came to the show as a dancer (I heard that they hired her to teach the football team the Single Ladies dance, and they liked her so much she became a regular), and she certainly seems to know what she's doing. Usually, she's just in the background, so it was nice to see her have her moment. And maybe I missed it, but why was the actual Britney Spears in a Cheerio uniform? I enjoyed getting to see more of Emma and Terri, as well as the John Stamos character. The plotline was a little out-there, but it's reassuring to know that they are still part of the show. And it's nice to see that Coach Bieste has a heart. I feel like she's just the kind of outcast that the show needs more of. Speaking of which, I wonder what happened to the new kids from last week... It will be interesting to see what happens next week! Mike O'Malley has been listed in the opening credits of the last two episodes, without appearing in them, so I doubt he'll die, but it's nice that there's some drama there, and more characters coming back from last season.
