There's not much to the site just yet but Andrew Stanton will be directing his first live action movie based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom stories. This is a golden opportunity for me to finally read those stories.

I'm pretty excited for this one - there just aren't enough gambles in the sci-fi movie world any more - everything either needs to be an established franchise like Star Trek or a small movie like Sunshine or Moon.

I just hope that Stanton heads back to Emeryville after Carter - losing both Bird and Stanton to live action would be catastrophic for Pixar.

    Ditto.

But be honest here... do you actually believe that they'll return?

    I don't. Not for a second.

Or am I just wrong about that?

In terms of eye candy, it looks good. But the feeling I get while watching it is similar to how I felt watching the Prince of Persia trailer, with that whole 'princess falling for our outsider hero' hackneyed story line. It also feels too much like the Star Wars prequels, with the look of the Martians and their planet. It's like I've seen the film before, even though that's obviously not true.

As much as I hope for something better than what the trailer is portraying, I have strong doubts about this film charting new territory. Stanton has been an amazing storyteller and director for animation. But not everyone can make the transition to live action successfully. I guess we'll know in about three months.

As for animation directors doing live action... I do have hope for Brad Bird's turn with M:I. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, but the trailers intrigue me. I think this one might turn out to be the best of the lot so far. I do believe Brad will follow in Burton's footsteps and become a terrific and well-respected live action director. As for Andrew... I'm not feeling as confident. And I honestly don't know why.

Anyhow, still have great hopes for this. The worst part is that characters don't look like I would've designed them.

Wall Street smells blood in the water surrounding “John Carter,” a space adventure from Walt Disney Studios that arrives in theaters on March 9.

It’s still too early to predict what kind of box office numbers “John Carter” might deliver, and Disney is just gearing up its marketing onslaught for the film. (An ad ran during the Super Bowl, for instance.) But the movie, produced for an estimated $250 million, has been battling negative buzz in Hollywood circles and now financial analysts are voicing concern that it could underperform.

Michael Nathanson, a media analyst at Nomura, said on Wednesday that “John Carter” could stir “near-term noise” of a negative nature. Michael C. Morris of Davenport & Company told investors to anticipate a write-down tied to the film. Doug Creutz, a Cowen analyst, listed “John Carter” as a “potential speed bump.”

On Tuesday, Disney reported generally positive quarterly earnings.

Keep a few things in mind before hopping on this bandwagon, however. “Wall-E,” which faced uncertain prospects before its release, took in $521 million globally at the box office. Analysts are a fretful bunch by nature. And “John Carter” has an insurance policy when it comes to its impact on Disney’s second-quarter financial results: Last year, the studio took a huge write-down for “Mars Needs Moms” in the same period; at the very least, that makes year-on-year comparisons easier for Disney should “John Carter” encounter trouble.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't do well at the box office. I haven't heard any buzz, positive or negative, from anyone about this film. It's as if movie goers aren't even aware of the film, even though I've seen two large freeway billboards in the Bay Area for it recently.

At $250 million, Disney better hope they've got a sleeper hit on their hands. But my gut tells me they don't. There's simply too much resemblance in the trailers to Price of Persia, with overtones of 'Attack of the Clones' thrown in for good measure. There's nothing truly original in the trailers that makes me want to see it.

If John Carter had been made before Avatar and Prince of Persia, I think it would have been a hit. But now... I feel like it's too little, too late.

Pixar is in no way making this film. It's a Disney production, with Andrew Stanton at the helm, but it's not a Pixar movie.

    Technically, it is.

It's got Disney's name on it, but it was developed at Pixar, with Pixarians serving as the director, writers, and producers. It's the 'grand experiment' for Pixar in terms of crossing over to live action filmmaking, which they've been planning to do for years.

I hope the movie is good, but I fear for the worst. Too little too late comes to mind.

No movie like this in a "post-avatar" world will survive.

I'll have to do some more reading when its not 12:30 in the morning.
