It is a lot of noise and flashy stunts without much substance. Not even Helena's witty turn can save it. With White House Down tanking this weekend too it could be a poor July 4 long weekend for action flicks.

The Wolverine and Pacific Rim are also tracking very soft at the moment - not a great sign for July. I'm not sure whether Ranger will end up being another John Carter but I think it will struggle domestically and i can't see it playing internationally at all - there is a big gap between the US release and much of Europe and Japan in early August.

Disney have opted for an August release due to MU opening as the kids get out of school (DM2 is already out in many European countries).

DM2 is likely to be north of $75m for the same period. $35m could see it struggle to $150m domestically which would be a disaster for Disney - especially as it will struggle to find an audience internationally.

Westerns don't typically play well abroad - Cowboys & Aliens did only 43% of its business outside the US. Sure Depp will bring along a crowd but I'd be surprised if it outperforms internationally. August rarely produces a box office hit in Europe except for comedies and home-grown movies. It is very unusual for a studio to schedule one of its summer blockbuster in those months - most of southern Europe is at the beach.

The Tourist bombed at the box office. Only his Disney movies mad a lot of money. Maybe it will help the Lone Ranger, but since the outlook isn't that good we will have to wait and see. By the way, is the movie in 3D. I just hate that and it annoys me that I have to watch MU in 3D.
