It wouldn't be so bad, but it is a really busy time at work. When I'm at work I'm stressed because I feel I should be home packing. When I'm home packing I'm stressed because I feel I should be at work. I will only be at work three days next week, and even if nothing else hits my desk next week, just what I already have would usually take 5 days.

I've had trouble sleeping for the past week, my chest is always tight and my back and shoulder muscles are in knots.

I know life will be so much simpler once we are in the new house. Our commute to work will change from an hour each way to 12 minutes each way. That is an extra eight hours per week to catch up on work or just enjoy myself at home. I just hope I make it till then without going over the edge.

Tomorrow, I am getting on a plane to Seattle, where after a quick two days with the in-laws, I am helping my Dad move to Orlando, where my Mom has been living for the last 6 months. Next Wed, the first of 3 "you fill, we move" containers shows up. The weather up in the northwest is usual for this time of year, cold and rainy. Hopefully, we will finish all the loading so that on Halloween we can load the van with the things that can't go in the trucks, like their 12 year old cat, and begin the 3300 mile drive, praying that the weather in the Rockies doesn't turn into a snowstorm. Then, when we arrive in Florida, we get to play at WDW for a few days (the one good thing) before (since my parents don't have a house yet...they are waiting until the one up in Washington sells) we begin the process of transferring the stuff from the 3 moving containers into storage.

    Wanna trade?

Good luck to the both of you - I grew up as an Air Force brat so I know alllllll about moving!

Do you plan on taking I-70 through Colorado, or I-80 through Wyoming? When we went to Disneyland we took I-80. Though it was a bit further, the passes are much lower than in Colorado. I've never been in Washington, Oregon or Idaho though, so I have no idea what you might be facing there.

    Good luck!!

Lives in Minnesota but doesn't like driving in snow...mmmmmmmmmmmm

I hear ya on moving stress. When we moved into the house we are in now 14 years ago I swore it was going to be the last move until retirement, and I am going to make good on that. This was the 3rd house we had built in 7 years....and I am still trying to figure out what the heck I was thinking...so many issues, so little time....

I still believe there are some boxes in the basement that remain unpacked for the last 2 moves.

Another reason for wanting to live closer to work.

I don't mind the cold. Fifteen to twenty below zero doesn't bother me a bit. Put on a good parka and you never feel it. But snow? Yuck!! Two crummy inches can turn the freeways into a nightmare.

Fortunately, we can get from our new house to the University in about 15-20 minutes without going on a freeway. A nice option for those snowy days.

When my Dad and Mom drove it at the end of March (when my Mom moved down there) they were followed by a snowstorm. It started in Idaho and followed them all the way into Nebraska. He doesn't want a repeat.

Dude, you need to get your priorities straight.

I hear ya on the move, though. One tip I offer to not get overwhelmed (cause then you'll just drown in the "responsibility" of it all), is, once you think of somethin' you have to---pack up some things, get materials, organize some stuff, make a call---*JUST* *DO* *IT* (please don't sue me Nike).

Really, I would catch myself doin' that when I moved last Feb., and if I snapped myself out of it and said, "Just *do* it!" and got to it right away,---voila---*gasp*---it was done! WOW! lol

    Really works!

Sounds to me like you're making a terrific move, closer to your work. You've been planning this move for a while, right? Are you very organized, Trippy? If so, if you are like me, moving details can be very overwhelming. And you are probably letting go of some things, maybe "downsizing" ?? This is a stressful time so maybe just accept it as stressful then *let it go*. That's hard, I know. But, when we face milestones, or "turning corners" in our lives, and of course the big word CHANGE, it just gets to us.

Just vent here, Trippy and rest that chest. Hug your wonderful wife!

I'm a list person, so it really helped calm me down to just walk through the house and make the list. Moving, especially if you've been in one place a long time is such a seemingly overwhelming task, but making a list and a general timeline really helped me a lot. I had an *A-1* box that had all the stuff I would need those first day or two - phone, t.p., wine, ya know, life essentials. I packed my suitcase like I was going on a week long vacation so I had all my toiletries and at least a week of clean clothes I could find. Unfortunately, my personalized *lists* and old websites are on an old computer that I can't access right now but here are some sites I remember that were kinda helpful: (I know you don't really have time to mess around on the computer but I thought I'd mention it just in case)

This may seem like just one MORE thing to do but these are just things that I found helpful so take it or leave it, I just thought I'd pass it along. Best of luck to ya! I'll be thinking of you guys.

You know I'm currently on vacation and I have to say that I was VERY anxious the first day I went into DC. I had never taken the train into DC and never taken the Metro. For that matter I had never been in DC since I was a child so I really don't know the city. But my anxiety was for nothing since DC is soooo easy to figure out. Its absolutely one of the most pedistrain friendly cities in the US. It occured to me that perhaps one reason why I go to WDW so frequently is because I know what to expect and I know the parks.

I also have NO intentions of moving again until retirement. I HATE moving! When I moved into my current home at the time I had two dogs and one was getting older so I wanted a home that would be better suited for me and my dogs. Appartently packing was too much for my older black lab since she had a stroke and had to be put down. Moving into my home should have been one of the most exciting and happiest moments in my life instead it was one of the worst days of my adult life.

Well enough about me, good luck on the move! And don't be afraid to take some time out of work to do the move.

Of course my darlin' wife will get me through this. She is so organized that she has already:

    1) Arranged for the moving company and coordinated the move around the closings.

    2) She will need to direct the move while I attend the closings, so she's set up an appointment to take care of giving me power of attorney so that I can also sign for her.

    3) Arranged for utilities at the new home and had service transferred to the new owners at our present place.

    4) Arranged with the telephone company to install service in our new home.

    5) Arranged with the cable company to install service in our new home.

    6) Contacted a place to come out and give us an estimate on converting the two fireplaces from wood-burning to natural gas.

    7) Contacted a company and arranged to have a new garage door opener installed.

    8) We will need all new window coverings. I actually helped with this one!! We ordered the last of what we needed today.

    9) Contacted an electrician to change the wiring in the master bath. We would like to have the fan on a separate switch instead of coming on whenever the lights are switched on. We would also like a couple of electrical outlets installed in the floor of the living room so we don't need to make sure anything needing electricity is around the perimeter of the room.

    10) Although the roof at the new place has a few years left in it, I wanted a new one put on right after we moved in. My wife found a contractor that works in our area that came with high recommendations from the people she works with. I helped with this one too! I met with the contractor to go over the technical details of what we wanted.

    11) Ooops... I almost forgot... she has also arranged for garbage pickup at the new place and done the change of address stuff with the Post Office.

So my wife does have things well in control. If it weren't such a stressful time at work I probably wouldn't be worrying a bit. I'm just looking at taking three days off work at a time when it will be very difficult to do so.

Oh well... this too shall pass. My daughter and I are both perfectionists and tend to get overwhelmed by stuff like this. My wife just digs in and does it.

    :)
