I notice a lot of people reffering to the two most nominated films No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood as being particularly violent films. Which I agree in the case of No Country, isint so much true for There Will Be Blood. Yeah the title sounds like the tagline for a Saw film, otherwise theres very little violence and yes blood in the film. The only scene of violence is largely off camera and implied, with only its aftermath breifly seen just after...

It's a relatively wide-open race.

I would've also liked to see John Travolta get a BSA nod for Edna in Hairspray, but I'm not surprised he didn't. An actor's job is to make you forget that you're watching John Travolta, and think only about Edna Turnblad. Not only did John Travolta manage this, he managed to make me forget I was watching a man. Edna really became a flesh and blood woman for most of the movie (You're Timeless to Me is the exception).

I'm watching Away from Her tonight, and I can't wait. It really looks good.

Glad to see No End in Sight and Sicko on the doc's list - great films.

It's a shame films released earlier in the year don't get the recognition they deserve, because I think Zodiac was a masterpiece. But not a single nod. Great to see Ratatouille nominated for screenplay and score. And I don't care if it's only nominated for effects, Transformers still sucked, and Michael Bay is still a hack.

I didn't find it depressing at all. In fact, it's almost like a good popcorny John Grisham-y movie, only with some real substance.

Funny Michael Clayton is the one of those I want to see the most. Followed by Juno, No Country, Blood and then Atonement. But I agree that there is always a depressing film on the list, Babel, which is a terrible film.

<<Glad to see No End in Sight and Sicko on the doc's list - great films.>>

It's not a real suprise these are on the list but political docs aren't my forte. I'm more interested in documentaries that focus on people. There's one out on dvd today called the King of Kong which focuses on two guys trying to get the all time high score on Donkey Kong. Or and I will keep singing its praises, Grizzly Man, one of my favorite movies ever.

I agree about Zodiac it gets better and better each time. Plus my favorite film of last year only got one nom American Gangster.

You have to wonder if there was no best Animated feature would Ratatouille have been nominated for best picture which if I had a chance to pick five would have been and bear in mind I have to see all five best picture nominees:

    American Gangster
    Zodiac
    Ratatouille
    Knocked Up
    The Bourne Ultimatium.

I know it's called best picture not popular picture but still in years past you've had winners like: The Departed, Forrest Gump, Gladiator, American Beauty, The Godfather. This year the closest you can call a crowd pleaser seems to be Juno.

As for Transformers I liked it a lot, it seemed like it's only goal was to entertain and for me it achieved that goal.

As for the biggest snub in my mind, where is the Best Screenplay nomination for Knocked Up?

Best advice you'll get today. I don't think it will beat Ratatouille, but it deserves to. Seriously. It's THAT good. It's now playing in art houses in "selected cities".

A couple observations I shall repeat from the Animation topics:

Amy Adams got skunked for Best Actress . . .

and "How To Hook Up Your Home Theater" got skunked for Best Animated Short.

    Don't'cha hate skunks?

(Pepe Le Pew and Flower notwithstanding)

On Persepolis, yet again one movie I won't watch because of my inability to separate work from my enjoyment of movies. Maybe someday it will be on cable and I will change my mind and find it terrific. If I see it now, I will just hate it no matter how good it is.

Totally agree. Ratatouille will probably win, and was a fine film, but Persepolis was moving on a whole different level.
