If you're lucky enough to work in a large city like I do-- every few years you might get a night at a museum- (lately no kids) and a sandwhich bar...but it's very rare.

we did things on a grand scale at one time--- both of my New Orleans trips were company recognition events for top performers..there were perks to Europe-- even a Disney award believe it or not.

    But not since the 90's

I remember my fav firm, every quarter there was a major event (Christmas was a dinner dance including partners), Summer was a family BBQ with games and rides for the kids, Spring was a recognition event (often a conference and dinner in a manner house with things like a rally driving expereince, falconry, wine tasting or cookery masterclass with celeb chef), Autumn was a conference and training event, but often with a famous speaker and dinner. Those were trimmed down when we were bought out with only 2 events per year, but they were bigger and more lavish. I understand that firm now does a Christmas lunch for staff now and that is it.

The companies that still have perks seem to be the German ones. SAP for example still offer weekly massages, subsidised dry cleaning with office pick up, free breakfast and lunch, and large incentive events. But the Germans have a very different attitude to the rest of the world. They think long term and quality wins. And the world wonders why they have been largely untouched by the recession/depression?

I don't think you can cite SAP as the typical German company. ;-) But in general I would agree that the corporate world in Germany is much different from what I know about the US. That's mainly due to the fact that the German economy is to a large extent made up of a lot of privately owned small to medium size companies.

Oh, and as for me - I like her, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan, really... don't know her music, just know that I've heard her before and didn't turn it off.

Many of us felt like the Wicked Step-Child of the corporate structure. I see former co-workers from time to time and VERY few of them still work there and some had been with the company when it first formed in the '80s. Many were laid off and many more moved on to work for other tech companies in the area, much more than one can attribute to normal corporate attrition.

As for Shania, I stopped listening to Country music more than 20 years ago as it is now mostly "Nashville Pop", so I've pretty much only seen her in Revlon commercials and that "Feel Like a Woman" song grates on my nerves after awhile. A friend of mine DID have an amusing nick name for her that is not in the least bit G rated and can't be repeated here, but it would fit nicely with that Sheana Easton song ;-).

Uh, yeah, like LisaAnn said, you're thinking of Sheena Easton, not Shania Twain.
