It's been a long time since I read any of the original Holmes stories & even longer since I saw any of the Basil Rathbone films, so this was a pretty fresh experience for me.

I went in just expecting a fun, popcorn movie, but it was actually pretty smartly written with some nice plot twists (and a hidden character for the Holmes fans). I also really, really enjoyed the Holmes/Watson subtext (yeah, I'm a big old slasher, lol).

I'm hoping to go see it again when I get paid next week, and I hope it does well enough to bring about the sequel it set up so well.

    Any thoughts on this movie?

The reason why not many people are talking about Sherlock Holmes is because the movie is being overshadowed by Avatar....

It looks like a fantastic movie and I love RDJ as an actor.

Perhaps because of the new movie, TCM just ran a marathon of them. Most were only about 65-75 minutes long. Very entertaining, usually. The spider woman one is probably the best. Interestingly, they set them in (then) present-day 40's England, as opposed to the time they were written.

And there were times i was thinking to myself that whoever wrote this film needs to write the pirate movies! i think this type of humor is right up the alley for a new pirate film.

My only real issues was (as AuroraRose already stated) Holmes being portrayed as more of an action hero than a detective, with somewhat pre-meditated psychic powers. The gritty action was almost Batman-y, or a rustic old-English version of Watchmen. And, in my theater, the darkness of the film seem to engulf the characters and props so that we just saw deep brown & black or just shadows on the screen at several points of the movie. As a joke was made about a prop in Holmes' hand, which we the audience could not see as his hand was lost in darkness, I think that our theater's projector was maybe the problem and not the film.

Again, it was an entertaining film, but was really darkly lit and Holmes' actions were interpreted differently from past movies and books.
