Must be because I don't have "elite" status here on the boards, my posts don't get read. :(

    Oh well...

Just to be clear Glen Slater is the lyricist and Alan has never written a line of lyrics for the Walt Disney Company in his life.

Menken *IS* the composer of the song, but he didn't write the lyrics. Writing the music and the words are two independent tasks.

Sorry that I didn't notice earlier (AND, thanks for the translations of dialogue as well...VERY cool, and I wish I'd read it BEFORE going to the park yesterday!).

    In general, anyway.

Okay.... but that Jasmine´s song "To Be Free" from DCA´s Aladdin show has not lyrics written by Menken? At least I remember reading "music and lyrics by Alan Menken".

That one is rather complicated. A lot of the lines were actually already written for a song that didn't make it into the movie. Alan then reworked it with the librettist for the show. Due to copyright issues it was simpler to have Alan credited as both. He would be the first to tell you (as he has told me on numerous occasions) that he simply fitted the words to the music. He has never seen himself as a lyricist and doesn't want to do it. Even on pet projects like Newsies he worked with another writer (even though Disney originally asked him to do both the music and lyrics). Alan has always been careful to keep within his comfort zone and considering the critical and commercial success he seems to have made the right choice.
