Now, with subs going back into the lagoon in WDL, is this a confirmation that Disney lied to their clients? If their statement was true, they would not have brought them back unless significant changes were made in show design/maintenance advanced technology.

While the new ride probably won't be 20K, I think it's safe to say that Eisner just lied to everybody so he wouldn't receive a lot of backlash for his stupid playground idea.

    Thoughts?

Were the subs removed from DL, and was the lagoon filled in? And now they are creating a brand new attraction based on a similar theme?

If so, then they should be able to do that at MK.

To my knowledge, Disney never made any public statements as to why the attraction was closed.

<<Now, with subs going back into the lagoon in WDL, is this a confirmation that Disney lied to their clients?>>

    No.

<<If their statement was true, they would not have brought them back unless significant changes were made in show design/maintenance advanced technology.>>

...and they haven't been brought back. We'll never know why the ride was closed, and why it hasn't or can't return.

You're making a leap to judgment. We don't know why the attraction was closed.

The OP was referring to DL, where a Nemo sub ride is being created.

It seems to me DL certainly benefits from the fact that the lagoon was never filled in. If the lagoon remained in WDW do you think a sub ride would have reappeared?

No, the subs at DL were never removed, and the lagoon was never filled in. The subs merely remained hidden from public view (they were in the show building that is disguised as a cave.) The lagoon remained filled with water, and for awhile, Disney didn't take very good care of it... it wasn't unusual to see trash littered around the edges, and a few bits floating in the water.

One of the rumors of WDW's lagoon is that it leaked, or that the lagoon surfaces may not have been structurally sound any longer. With the MK being built on top of the Utilidors structure, it could explain why they were not able to save the subs there.

After that, it was announced they would not be back. No reason was given by the company. The high costs and not handicap accessible were all brought up in forums such as this.

At some point in the late 90s, around the time one sub was taken to Casatway Cay and sunk as a prop/artificial reef, Disney said that the were going over concepts for an attraction or attractions to take over that real estate. ***Note to VBDAD55, I don't think a Pooh-themed playground was ever discussed at WDI!

The DL subs closed in 1998. Their lagoon was never filled in and the water was treated, unlike WDW's the last few years.
Originally, Disney stated there would be a new attraction built very soon on the same water. A subs themed ride to Atlantis was designed, but went no where when the movie bombed. Other concepts were tossed around before Burbank settled on the Nemo idea.

The Atlantis sub ride was going to be pretty advanced, with some amazing effects, including a part where it appears the sub is taking on water.

thanks - I could understand how it wouldn;t have been -- if I was in WDI I would have gone "WHAT ?" --

so they just bought a playground from Home Depot instead

OPS sought out to "sink" any plan of getting the subs back up .. after a visit by the second in command - Iger? Or perhaps Ovitz who saught to get it opened. Around '99?

That topic must have been archived a year ago or so.

Everything was in bad condition - some of it deliberately set .. so the big heads would officially give the "nix it" executive decision.

So .. in this case .. we cannot blame Eisner and his second in command ... but a division at WDW who wanted it gone!

Ah, that explains the playground...in tune with recent ( at that time) non-PIXAR productions - like Treasure Island and Home on the Range

By inserting another attraction directly on top of where 20K stood .... it would cut off the land from possible expansion.

An expansion that could double the size of Fantasyland over the years .. with not one .. not two .. but many rides from "C" to "D" to "E" status!!

... and all this ... and the utility door centered in the back left alone.

If anyone looks at a real photo above ... the possibilities are endless!!
