    >>One year ago today there were published on this page the names and photographs of New York State's war dead, men and women who answered their nation's call and who did not come home from the faraway battlefields. Today, another Veterans Day later, they number 58 more, gone now to their graves, living on eternally in the aching breasts of their loved ones - and saluted by those whose fortune it is to continue to dwell in the America for which these warriors gave up their lives.
This struggle is a pivotal one, an epic clash of civilizations, one of history's great shuddering paroxysms. It was already brewing 87 years ago today, when the guns fell silent in Europe and Armistice was declared and so many good-hearted souls truly believed humankind would war no more. Pretty it was to think so, but destiny had other plans. And now we face down another century's menace, sending another century's soldiers to fight and, sometimes, to die.

There are many who choose to believe that these soldiers died for nothing - for lies, for fraud, for some vast swindle. It would be a shameful thing if that were true, but it is not, and it honors neither the dead nor the living to cheapen the sacrifices already made and those still to come. It can be said this war has not always been waged wisely and it can be understood that more and more Americans are disheartened. But the cauldron of the Middle East is already more promisingly stable than it was not so very long ago, thanks to this U.S.-led war effort and to those who have fought and fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan. The measure of the success of our mission there will be taken not today and not tomorrow, but by the children. Yours and ours. And those whose parents are listed above.

Today is called Veterans Day - in celebration of those who have worn the uniform in other times, and those who wear it today, and those who will wear it for the rest of time as they march on in the big parade. We are proud of them all, every one.<<

My father-in-law, a highly decorated WWII bomber pilot lays dying in a hospice today. He's been there for eight days now. He's 85 years old and until the past two weeks or so he was able to excitedly share with us the very proudest moments of his life... Conducting dozens upon dozens of missions for his country and bringing his crew home unscathed.

As I listened to the radio this morning as the morning DJs interviewed a retired Marine who was one of the Iran Hostages released when Reagan took office and the DJs thanked him so deeply, so heartfelt... I cried when I realized that it's quite possible... in his own way... my father-in-law was and is waiting for today, Veterans Day, to say goodbye to this world.

We're proud of you "Dad"... We love you... Thank you - for EVERYTHING.
