It's opening weekend isn't even going to match the opening day of Alice in Wonderland which was 40 million. And it's not hitting the opening weekend of Alice which was 116 million.

Not surprised. First one is icky and grotesque.

    • The first day of 2010’s Alice in Wonderland (even with Memorial Day added)
    • Tomorrowland‘s opening weekend
    • John Carter’s opening weekend
    • The Lone Ranger’s opening weekend
    • Prince of Persia‘s opening weekend
    • The third weekend of Zootopia (it did slightly better than the fourth)
    • Star Wars: The Force Awakens Thursday, December 17th premiere shows divided by two
    • Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour opening weekend in 2008 when it played on 683 screens compared to 3,763 screens for Alice
    • Flubber‘s opening weekend in 1997 (OK, if estimates stick, Alice will have beat it by a little bit, but still…)

I think people are tiring of Depp's "weird" act. At first it was fun, especially in the Pirates films. But he keeps going back to the well, hammering the same craziness over and over. Initially he created eccentric characters; lately he has gone over the line to full-on nutso. I never thought I would say this about the man who was once my favorite actor. But lately Depp just bores me. :( :(

I actually thought this one looked a little better than the last one. o_O

I didn't like the last one much at all.

I agree RoadTrip. It would be nice if he just played a more regular guy of some sort. At this point, that would seem exotic and daring and more of a challenge.

It's weird (or perhaps I should say "curious"):

I thought the first Depp Alice was okay, but never would have thought it would become the huge hit it did. Probably did better than its quality would warrant. This one will probably do less well than its quality would warrant (haven't seen it, but the trailer at least made me laugh a time or two).

    So maybe it evens out.

I'm also getting bored of Depp's weird act, though not of Depp necessarily (as FKA FG says, he was quite good in Black Mass).

I couldn't stand the first Alice. But there are reasons why it was a success, 3D was at its peak. This was the first film after Avatar. And Depp was still a pretty big star.

Now the sequel came out six years too late. 3D isn't the big thing it was. Depp hasn't had a hit in years. And whether they're true or not, the abuse allegations against Depp couldn't have come at a worse time for the film

One of my favorite roles from Depp is in 'Donnie Brasco'

    Excellent! And not weird!

I thought he did an excellent job in 'Finding Neverland'... a very different role for him.

Just saw the movie over the weekend with my parents. I really liked it. Once again it was visually stunning and incredibly imaginative with a decent little message in there for those who want a little depth to a Disney movie. I would recommend it to those who enjoyed the first Burton Alice movie...he didn't direct this one, so it's not quite as quirky.

That's a good report. I'm glad to hear it was pretty enjoyable. If a movie is fun, I'll usually like it.
