My mom read that story to me growing up, and I in turn read it to my step-son. It's a wonderful book, and fun to read aloud because the giants talk funny. My step-son still references "whizpoppers" whenever possible! :D

I'm intrigued... will probably see it. Not being familiar with the story, what does "BFG" stand for? Of course what came to mind is Big Effing Giant but I'm pretty sure that is not it! :D :p :D

    "Friendly"

Knowing what I know about Roald Dahl, I wouldn't be surprised if he was completely aware of the other possible meaning of the initials...

Hopefully, the parents were all out shopping on Friday for holiday BBQ and will take their kids later this weekend.

I really want BFG to succeed. I want to see more visionaries like Spielberg working Disney Live Action. I feel as though this division has become the Mouse's red-headed step child (much like Depp's Mad Hatter) and needs a major boost of vitality.

If BFG doesn't provide that with a solid box return... well, who the heck knows what path Live Action will take. Especially after Pete's Dragon sends it plummeting off the cliff!

They might get stuck using 3rd raters like Brad Bird, Kenneth Branagh and Jon Favreau.

A local TV station gave BFG a very good review. They did say the movie unfolded rather slowly (which the reviewer liked) but I wonder if that will hurt the film with kids.

I've seen generally good reviews for BFG. I'm a little surprised they didn't hold it x-number of weeks more to give Dory's B.O. a chance to slow more. That film is doing way better than I think most expected, topping the B.O. for a third straight week - perhaps Disney didn't expect it to do quite so well either, and really wanted a kid-friendly film to open on the holiday weekend. Understandable, but I think in retrospect BFG might have done better had they scheduled it for a bit later.

Agreed. Methinks marketing in Burbank doesn't quite get this.

Families don't go to movies as frequently as they used to; a combination of lack of time and lack of funds is responsible. So it would be perfectly understandable that FD would outperform BFG this weekend because of the families who deliberately waited for the holiday to see FD.

Burbank doesn't see the problem because they're hyperfocused on the several weeks between the two releases. But that's only significant for hard core movie goers that see several films each month. And most families no longer fit into that category, even during the summer.

Oh, yeah. This one is going to sink like Alice. And no one in the Rotunda Bldg should be the least bit surprised. The tea leaves had settled into The Grim long before the film was in the can.

Seriously, Mouse. What the heck were you thinking on this one?
