I completely agree and I've learned that the hard way. Weight maintenance is easier, even if you have a metabolism shift, than weight loss. Don't deny yourself, but learn where reasonable boundaries are.

I've had to learn that there's always something. It's always someone's birthday and there's cake or there's always some holiday with a barbecue or there's a party or we're going out to the bar this weekend please come with us and on and on. And that's all great—I'm a lucky guy to have family and friends and the means to eat well when so many go without in this world. But I've also learned that, unlike when I grew up and my family went out to eat once every month or two (and even then that was a lot compared to most families), people eat out a lot more and you can't view it as a special treat where you can get whatever you want. I skip dessert a lot and opt for coffee (black) a lot. Or I'll view a glass of wine as my treat. And at parties my wife and I will share a small slice of cake. And if I bite into a dessert and I don't love it, I don't hesitate to throw it away. Like most people, I was raised to just abhor wasting food, but I've changed my tune. Portions are outlandish.
