My biggest complaint: WAY too much Gazelle. I was thoroughly sick of her and that song well before the 15 minute dance version on the credits. Nothing against the character, other than she didn't need to be in that much of the movie.

As evil plans go, it wasn't the best - sort of a forced plot point in service to the Movie Message. I've seen far worse though.

And apparently it's not offered in English, I hate Disney Germany with their German celebrity voices. Instead of using professionals for dubbing, they get celebrities and it just sounds wrong and stupid.

The reason why I'm a bit angry about the celebrity voices is, because Disney Germany already ruined Toy Story 3 when they changed the voice of Woody to use a celebrity. Since then we only watch Disney animated movies in English in the cinemas or skip them.

This movie turned out to be a huge hit for Disney. Honestly I didn't expect that.

My (3D) ticket cost nearly double what I typically pay for movies, so I have to think that was a factor

If you take that into consideration, then you have to do that with every movie. Over here the prices for all movies are basically the same.

However, the movie is surpassing 800 mio Dollars in the worldwide box office, so it can't be denied that it is a huge success and a beloved movie. China even granted the movie an extension for two more weeks. That almost never happens to Hollywood movies.

On the contrary ... 3D isn't nearly the draw that it was 7 or 8 years ago.

One COULD argue that much of this is momentum from the last few Disney mega-successes.

Or the result of a positively brilliant marketing campaign. (I've viciously dissed the marketeers in the past, but they really got it together on this one!)

But it IS a very good movie.

The success of this movie is nuts, but it shouldn't be all that shocking. It does what Disney does well - a cute furry animal movie. But it also does what Disney NEVER does well - a message movie. It's a fluffy bunny movie giving a sly wink at race relations. Everyone wins.

I think that momentum is definitely playing a key role here. There is that feeling right now that "you can't go wrong with Disney."

But there's no denying that there's a big audience going because it's a typical Disney movie, with another big audience going because it's NOT a typical Disney movie. And in the end, it's easy to sell a good product.

I'd argue that's exactly what Disney is best at. Although they love to fill their marketing with tons of "dreams come true" crap, the best movies have always had a little something more beneath the surface. Sure, there are lots of bland magic/wishes/dreams movies (particularly with the overhyped-princesses...I'll never understand Cinderella's popularity), but the ones that really stick with you are the ones that have broader themes beneath the surface. Everything from Pinocchio to Mary Poppins to Hunchback has a deeper meaning if you look at the broad themes presented. Fairy tales have always been about teaching a moral; Disney is just the modern version of that

But yes, it is easy to sell a good product. I'm sure the modern-ish setting also helped attract an audience that doesn't always see Disney movies, since it seemed to break their mold a little more

I finally got around to seeing it a couple of weeks ago (and am finally navigating the new boards). I couldn't help notice some interesting parallels between the story and the current political campaign. Or am I imagining things?
