Freeform has greenlit a new drama pilot, “The Deep,” Variety has learned. The hourlong drama is set in Bristol Cove, a coastal town known for its legend of once being home to mermaids. When the arrival of a mysterious girl proves this folklore all too true, the battle between man and sea takes a very vicious turn as these predatory beings return to reclaim their right to the ocean. Eline Powell (Game of Thrones) and Rena Owen (The Last Witch Hunter) are set as series regulars on Freeform drama pilot The Deep. Based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White, The Deep is set in Bristol Cove, a coastal town known for its legend of once being home to mermaids. When the arrival of a mysterious girl proves this folklore all too true, the battle between man and sea takes a very vicious turn as these predatory beings return to reclaim their right to the ocean. Powell will play Po, a strange young woman who appears traumatized and lost. Growing increasingly ill and exhausted on land, Po is revealed to be a mermaid.
