You know, back in the day, I liked to pick out special effects in movies. Nowadays, it so seamless, gone are the days of locked down cameras and shuddering glass matte paintings.

Check out the special effects from 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

It's pretty incredible what can be done today. CG done correctly can really blend in well. However if they cheap out, over use it or don't get the right artists it looks terrible and throws you out feel of the movie.

Absolutely agree. The recent 'Alice' movies are an example of overuse. I don't believe for a moment that those environments are anything but green screens and tennis balls on a sound stage.

    Thanks for the video.

ILM did a fantastic job with TFA.

Disney paid 4 billion Dollars for LF mainly becuase of Star Wars, but I think ILM is the real gem in the Lucasfilm group.

If you look at Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow the movie was filmed completely on virtual sets using Macs. It was one of the first to be 100% shot that way. Later you see the technique done on Sin City, 300 and Sanctuary. It reduced filming time from six months to 26 days and was done for a certain look and feel of the movie. It was suppose to feel very 1930's comic book mixed with 30's detective novels. They did a great job except the actors look like they are standing on a stage with nothing around them. There is no foreground objects. It's a great movie and the script is very intelligent and acted well I just think they could have blended things a little better.

I thought Sky Captain was supposed to look artificial. I thought it worked for that movie, but usually doesn't.

The artificial look did work really well for the movie. I just wish they had more foreground objects in a lot of scenes and blended it a little better. There were too many scenes that it looked like the actor was in front of a screen with no depth. Just a nit pick really. The movie really never got the attention it deserved.
