You tell 'em, Mr. President! Yeah! (I just can not *wait* for official late-night tweets from the white house residence...imagine how he'll combat all the day's slights against him with his patented lethal, 140 character retorts!)
"President-elect fires off angry missive at broadway cast" Wow, I think I just penned my first "Onion" headline right there. Oh how I wish it were!
The message from the cast was "We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.” On election night or the night after (I forgot), Trump made it a point to say he would work on behalf of - wait for it - all Americans. How dare the Hamilton cast insist on holding him to his own words! Outrageous! I don't think that apology will be coming any time soon.
While I appreciate the sentiment behind the message of Hamilton's cast, they were not only speaking to Pence, they were speaking to all the middle-Americans that voted for Trump/Pence - a large segment of our country that already feels looked down upon by urban liberals. Sure, if you take the literal message of the Hamilton cast, there is nothing wrong with it. But the way it was done isn't likely to foster understanding across the great urban/rural divide in our country. Quite the opposite I'm afraid. But I'm sure it felt good to do.
I think it likely that only people who would be real upset at such a mild statement would be those already upset that the founding fathers aren't being played by white guys to begin with. But Frum has it right. Beware the ginned up controversies serving as diversions.
I completely understand why you feel that way, but dismissing them all outright as anti-gay or racist is foolish. Some of them are, sure, but not a majority of them. But they know that's how city-folk view all of them and they are tired of being judged or talked down to. That was probably the most appealing part of Trump for them - his courage to tell people off, especially the "elites".
Trump reminds me Arnold Schwarzenegger- who became the 'Gover-Nator' of California and promised to shake up the State. After all of Arnold's bullshit jabs at politicians - and photo ops, he was proved to be nothing more than a road side attraction that the curious watched with fascination. Welcome President-elect Trump. Let's all grab some popcorn and watch his BS start flying. And get a backbone Donald. You seem to be able to dish it out. You want the cast of 'Hamilton' to apologize? Oh and Arnold is now the new boss on Celebrity Apprentice. And Americans just eat it up.
Still cannot watch any of his movies, and I did like some of them, since his reign. I did love how he kept getting shot down trying to bully through with his agenda.
I was with you until you got to this part. If they think Trump is "courageous" for telling off the "elites" and this appeals to them...
So what? Every single damn one of them forfeited any right they had to be respected or taken seriously when they pulled that lever. They exposed themselves as being either racist, unbelievably gullible, or just incredibly dumb-stupid. This is not a problem that can be fixed by being nice to idiots. This is not a problem that can be fixed. Either what's about to happen with President-Elect Slimeball snaps them out of it (unlikely) or we have really dark days ahead. And I'll be damned if I take any of the blame for it. I didn't do this to my country. THEY did.
I'm not quite that harsh. It may help that I have a boatload of relatives smack dab in the middle of the country, some of whom voted for Trump. Some Trump voters were desperate and duped. Some voted for Obama twice. And duped people can wake up or be un-duped. But we'll never un-dupe them we call them idiots.
Same. Seriously, same. I keep reading about how this (THIS, seriously, this? After everything else that's happened?) will be the wakeup call for Trump voters. They voted, the thinking goes, for someone to fix the economy and build the wall and blah blah, and instead they get a President who tweets late at night about Hamilton and Saturday Night Live. Who on earth are we kidding? The kind of people who voted for Trump love him precisely because of this. They are dimwits who know nothing but care only about strength and authoritarianism. They don't care that Iraq is in shambles and soldiers are dead; they just care that we showed strength. They don't care that the wall is a terrible idea that will never work. They just care that we talk bigly about it to show strength. These are people who think America is a namby pamby country that's fallen off the rails because we decided to treat people with respect and use some diplomacy around the world. These are the people who foam at the mouth because a kid got a participation trophy and that trophy is EXACTLY WHAT'S WRONG WITH AMERICA DONTCHA KNOW!!! These are the people who harangue about Schrodinger's Immigrant: the undocumented worker who's super lazy but who also steals your job. These people will tell you all about how the government should be run, what we should do, and how we should take care of ISIS, but they couldn't name ten US Senators. They couldn't name 10 Representatives, probably including their own. They couldn't name five cabinet offices. Their eyes will glaze over and they'll start to drool when you ask them what a reconciliation committee is in Congress. Ask them how the majority leader controls the Senate calendar and they'll say "What's a majority leader?" Have them name all eight Supreme Court justices. Yeah, these people love their country so much they can't bother to know anything about it. They have all the answers but don't know how anything actually works. Hey, maybe if I just understood their economic anxiety enough I'd understand all the Naziism and the misogyny and the no-longer-even-thinly-veiled racism and the Islamophobia and the anti-gay rhetoric. Those poor poor Trump voters living in down and out West Virginia and Columbus, Ohio, they sure have it tough. If only there had been a candidate who'd put forth multiple detailed plans to help them and who had decades of government experience and unmatched time working with a broad variety of politicians in both political parties....
No, they just decided that racism, misogyny, white supremacy, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and hatred of gays weren't deal breakers. They just said, "We don't love those things, but email server, so...whaddya gonna do?" Intellectually, I understand all the research that talks about how you persuade people. You don't insult them. You don't talk down to them. You don't even tell them they're wrong (even if they are). It all says showing people facts doesn't help; they just dig in their heels deeper and cling to their false beliefs. I understand all of it and what I'm supposed to do. And maybe, maybe someday I'll get back to that. But right now, I don't have it in me. I'm too depressed and too stunned that millions of my fellow Americans are so stupid, so lazy, so ignorant, and so willing to embrace a truly monstrous, odious human being because they didn't like Hillary because her last name was Clinton and because they vaguely heard some stuff about some emails that seemed shady. They put intellectual shallowness and vile behavior on the scale next to career politician and said "Yup, they're both the same, so I'll go with the guy who's rich because I wanna be rich someday." So for now, I'm going to say what they are and call them what they are: stupid, ignorant fools who are probably racist, xenophobic, misogynist tools, or people who are stupid, ignorant fools who have no problem being led by a racist, xenophobic, misogynist tool.
Meanwhile, Trump is demanding an apology. He also tweeted his displeasure at the latest SNL, again. Good God, are we going to have 4 years of whining about SNL skits, fercryinoutloud? Every president since Ford has been lampooned on SNL, and certainly any of them could have found it "unfair." But not a single one of them whined about it.
