Disney’s adding a brand-new mission to Star Tours based on Star Wars: Episode VIII. If this means BB8 becomes our new co-pilot, buy me a ticket right away because I must go there immediately. http://io9.gizmodo.com/disney-is-adding-episode-viii-to-star-tours-1789172014
Hopefully the new scenes will come to DLP as well, since they are currently upgrading the attraction with The Adventures Continue. But since they only mention the US parks, I'm doubtful.
I imagine that once the Adventures Continue upgrades are made (digital projection, C3-PO pilot, technical upgrades, etc), it would be very simple for them to just add the Episode VIII segment into the mix. It seems like it would require almost no investment, and would be a great way to have an additional promotion to tie in with the new film.
Just a little off topic but where is the sneak preview for Rogue One at Disneyland? Are they still showing that Star Wars clip show?
So that means Star Tours will stay in Tomorrowland, and not move over to Star Wars Land where it rightfully belongs. Boo, pick a plotline!!!!!
I imagine that Star Tours will still close on both coasts fairly soon after the new land opens. The cost of developing a new 60-second scene is minimal compared to a new attraction, let alone the massive new land. It will basically serve as an advertisement for the movie and a teaser to build hype for the new theme park land; I don't see this as a big enough investment to justify keeping Star Tours around after the new land opens (though it could take a year or two before it actually closes and is replaced)
Is there an estimated opening for SW Land? I think I read the river and railroad will re-open Spring 2017 (not even sure about that one - anybody?) but SW Land is still very vague.
Star Wars Land is rumored to be open in 2018. That will give them time to finish the new parking structure which they will need.
I think they're hoping to get DL's land open in time for Christmas 2018, with WDW's project about 4-6 months behind that, assuming nothing goes wrong (and of course something will) The River and Railroad are expected to be back late spring of next year (likely around/after Memorial Day), which will delay Fantasmic! 2.0 until mid/late summer since they'll need to have everything operational for rehearsals. Then again, if they encounter some of the problems that Rivers of Light is having at DAK, who knows when the new show will make it on line
So the initial virus will disappear, after having begun the spread of the insidious wasting disease that is Star Wars. And so it goes.
To be quite honest, I don't care two f's about Star Tours. I liked it when it was in its original form when I was a kid, but now- flight simulators give me a wicked whiplash, and seeing all the action in 3-D really makes me nauseous. It's just not that special. I miss Rex the Robot, though. A lot.
