It’s perfectly understandable to wonder why there are no rats, robots, or anthropomorphized emotions on Pixar’s upcoming slate of sequels, which kicked off with Finding Dory and continues through 2019 with Cars 3, Toy Story 4, and The Incredibles 2.

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Pixar president Jim Morris spoke about the studio’s development process, why certain sequels made the cut, and why you won’t be seeing anything less than original at Pixar for quite some time.

Woohoo! I think Pixar has gone slightly downhill (though still better than most!) since they started producing a bunch of sequels, so I'm excited for originality to return!

It’s been 12 years since we first met the incredible characters of The Incredibles: Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, Dash, Jack Jack, Frozone, Syndrome, and, of course, Edna Mode. More than a decade later, Pixar and original writer-director Brad Bird are revisiting everyone’s favorite super family, with the upcoming Incredibles 2 scheduled for release in 2019.

In typical Pixar fashion, the studio is keeping details tightly under wraps, so we don’t know much beyond the release date and the fact that yes, it is happening. But when EW recently spoke to Bird about the Blu-ray release of his first movie, The Iron Giant, we couldn’t resist asking him about the status of The Incredibles 2, too. (After all, in addition to writing and directing the original film, he also voiced the cape-eschewing Edna.)
