You can start with Johnny Depp's mediocre singing, as well as Helena Bonham Carter's mediocre singing, and the decision to drop the opening song, and the Tim Burton art direction and the blood and gore. Blecch.

I saw the live show in L.A. with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. Incredible.

I saw the original with Lansbury and Len Cariou, and it still may be the best musical I've ever seen.

    Also related...

This was recorded in 2002, at the height of the direct-to-video sequel phase. It sort of makes you think

That's indeed a very interesting quote by Michael Eisner. I wonder how long it was actually in the works? I can imagine they worked on it for quite some time now, but wanted to try other classic movies first to see if a live action version could work. BatB is one of Disney's crown jewels and I'm sure they didn't want to rush it and make it a flop.

We have just returned from the cinema watching BATB in IMAX 3D OV. It is a wonderful movie. I had very low expectations, but I loved every minute of it. The CGI was fantastic and even Emma Watson did a good job. However the animated movie is still the better version.
