Some interesting stuff in there, though nothing terribly groundbreaking. A lot of the small things he said really seemed to highlight how out of touch he is with a lot of consumers (like not realizing that he didn't need to explain what Tatooine is at a tech convention). He really seems to believe wholeheartedly in his plan for TDWC, which is good in a lot of ways, but I still can't ignore how completely misguided it seems. Technology isn't the solution to every problem
After forty years, I think we know what Tatooine is. Too bad we don't have spell checkers that accept it.
Chances are increasing that Robert Iger might extend his contract again. Disney CEO Robert Iger May Extend Tenure Again
If there's any truth to the rumours, I wonder if he is making it official during today's earning's call or if he waits until the general meeting in March.
I really hope that Iger leaves when he said he would, though his two previous extensions don't give me much hope. He's beloved by Wall Street, but I really don't like his franchise/acquisition-driven focus for the company. The sooner TWDC can shift toward developing its own content and break away from the tentpole/franchise approach, the better I hadn't realized there is a call today, but I would guess they would announce it at the general meeting next month. Seems like a big announcement for the typically small-scale and bland calls. I bet they would want to have a replacement in the pipeline before they announce another extension though
While I agree with you that he should leave, I don't see anyone to take over his job right now. Unfortunately they didn't give Tom Staggs a chance. The Netflix acquisition doesn't look to happen either, so that Hastings could take his position, because I think he would be a good choice. I would much rather see Bob staying for two more years than Sheryl Sandberg becoming CEO, which until now is also just a rumour.
I read a rumor today that she is looking at a political run in 2020, which would preclude her from taking over a massive company like Disney in the next few years. Who knows how true that is though...
Iger was just asked about extending his reign during the Q&A portion of the call. He gave a generic "I'm going to do what's in the best interest of the company" statement, saying he had been working with the Board, but generally being non-committal to whether he will stay or go Given that all his previous statements were that he would leave, this certainly sounds like a change of position
After his massive flop with the NFL and his strong ties to Mrs Clinton's unsuccessful campaign, it seems unlikely that he would be a contender for President any time soon I was going to say that at his age he's a little old to follow the proposed trajectory through congress or a governorship en route to being President, but he's still a decade younger than Trump is now, and that would at least give him some political experience first. I still think it's unlikely, but I thought Trump was impossible so what do I know?
So the rumours were true. Robert Iger extended his contract until 2019. I guess he wants to open SW Land, like he wanted to open SDL.
I put that here, because I don't want to open a new thread. I just read a rumour that Apple considers buying TWDC. Hopefully it's just a rumour, because I want Disney to stay independent. Disney doesn't fit into the Apple portfolio at all.
I am disappointed but not surprised by this announcement. The only silver lining I can think of is that he only extended for a year, which would imply he will actually leave at that point. Otherwise, why not extend it several years all at once? I saw that article, and it seemed more like wild speculation than anything to me. The source isn't entirely reputable, and there's no reason to think that Disney would want to be bought out any time soon, or that Apple wants/needs to spend their huge pile of money. I agree that Disney doesn't fit Apple well (though Apple could potentially fit within Disney). Apple is very good at what it does, but it has a very narrow line of business
