Now that Tom Staggs clearly isn't in line for the position, who do you think should be the next CEO of Disney?
I'm hopeful that it will be an outsider. Disney spends a lot of time "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic" with various managers and VPs, so it seems like it would be great to bring in a new person with fresh ideas. Obviously this has the potential for failure, but I don't see Iger's IP-centric business model as sustainable in the long term, so I'm ready for a change That said, I have no idea who it would be. It would be great to have somebody who is familiar with the entertainment industry, but I think it would be more important to have someone who is familiar with running a company with diverse interests, like GE or Kraft. I don't see someone from the tech sphere (like Google or Apple) being as successful in a company as broad as Disney, but I'm sure they would be a popular choice
Good question. I always thought that Tom Staggs would have been a good choice. I hope they bring someone in who has experience in the entertainment business. A few weeks ago THR speculated that Sheryl Sandberg from Facebook could become the next CEO. I don't know her, but for me she is the wrong choice. Disney so much bigger and more diverse than that internet company. Unfortunately all the perfect persons from inside the company are either too old, like Alan Horn, or lack experience, like Kathleen Kennedy. I fear that Bob Iger's contract gets extended again. Unfortunately the Disney Family isn't involved anymore in the decision making, like 30 years agon when Roy brought in MDE.
I don't know where this rumour is coming from, but I read on some Disney sites that Bob Chapek might be in the run for Disney's next CEO.
Bloomberg posted an article yesterday speculating it would be Chapek, but it really didn't seem to be anything more than speculation. Based on what he's done so far with Parks & Resorts, he seems like a better fit for a middle management-type role than the head executive. He seems to be all about making cuts, balancing budgets, and taking the most obvious path available; he doesn't seem to have much of a vision for something bigger as far as I've seen
I don't know a lot about Chapek, but I never had him on the list. As you said, he doesn't appear to be a top manager. I still think they will bring someone in from the outside. Maybe it is for the best, but I find it a little bit sad that there's no Disney family member who could run the company, like the Fords still do.

I think I'm more annoyed that Iger would be staying around longer. IMO he's already long outstayed his welcome and should have left around the time his original contract expired in 2012. The stuff he does looks great for investors, but seems really questionable for the long-term health of the company While I'm not sure about James Murdoch specifically (and know very little about him), he sounds like the type of person who could do a lot of good for Disney. An outsider to the company with experience in the large-scale media industry who could come in and take things in a new direction. Of all the names that have been considered online for years, he seems like the best option to me; the internal choices all seem very disappointing to me
Looks like the Fox acquisition is official. I'm still not sure it makes sense to me why they're doing it, but they also didn't ask for my help Disney buys much of Fox in megamerger that will shake world of entertainment and media Disney already has its own (pretty darn strong) live action film studio, so I don't see what advantage they get from buying up another one. Yes, Fox makes films that would never be released under the Disney brand, I see no reason that Disney couldn't create a more mature offshoot studio, like they did in the past with Touchstone, Castle Rock, and Miramax. Sure, there's something to be said for getting the talent all at once, but I'm not sure that's worth the insane price of $52 billion. It just doesn't add that much value to TWDC overall I'm also dismayed that Iger is now saying he will stay until 2021. I was more than ready for him to go when his first contract ran up in 2012; I can't imagine him and his policies sticking around for another 4 years at this point. Hopefully this merger will bring with it some viable candidates for his replacement, who can bring fresh ideas to the table
Studio schmudio. They're getting major stakes in Sky, Hulu, Star India, and 300+ cable channels worldwide, including some of the big names in America (FX, National Geographic) and several regional sports networks. This is mainly a honkin' big distribution play, with the Fox movie and television library being a bonus. Sky is the biggie. And remember, the deal also gets them quite a few valuable Disney-related assets that were either Fox-owned or Fox-locked via licensing deals, most notably the X-Men, Star Wars A New Hope, Modern Family, and Avatar. Oh, and Anastasia really will be a Disney movie now.
While you're pondering all that, ponder this too. The Murdochs are keeping the Fox Television Network and all the O&O stations ... but they just sold nearly all of the programming to Disney. The only programs Murdoch's Fox would still be producing are ... sports and "news". Kind of makes you wonder what the plans for Fox Television actually are, don't it.
So it really happened and Disney bought Fox. I wish that wouldn't have had happened. Fox has so many great movies and franchises that Iger is going to kill now just to get some IPs for his streaming service. Are the Simpsons now also part of TWDC? I love that show and hopefully it survives at Disney.
Given how much Iger likes making sequels, spin-offs, and reboots, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the newly-acquired Fox IPs got expanded under Disney control. I'm more concerned that this merger is being used as yet another excuse for Iger to extend his time with Disney, which is really the last thing I want to see
As far as I know Iger already said that he will stay unti 2021 if the merger goes through. So I guess Fox is going to replace Touchstone as the more adult oriented brand.
