Disneyland is about to change Aladdin's Oasis to a Tropical Hideaway. The Tropical Hideaway Discovered in Adventureland at Disneyland Park I am happy that they are finally doing something with the location. It has been under used for a very long time.
Looks like it should be a nice place, and will tie-in perfectly with the theme. I'm also glad that this location will finally return to regular use; in all my years of visiting the park, I've never actually managed to go in there since it's been (mostly) closed for decades. I worry that this type of place could become completely overrun with APers since it seems like the in-park sequel to Trader Sam's, but hopefully it won't be too bad There's also something about the coy wording that makes me think they'll serve alcohol here. The Parks Blog tends to over-promise everything and hype it beyond belief, but they're being suspiciously coy on this one. Adding alcohol to DL now would let them get the outrage out of the way before Star Wars opens next year. I know there's an OC Register article that says no alcohol, but I'm just not sure I believe them
Aladdin's Oasis "went away" for all practical purposes over a decade ago. Which is a bit of a pity; I recall having lunch there, not long after it opened, and enjoying both the food and the show. This sounds like at least part of it will be a "Tahitian Terrace" reboot. Which could also be good. At any rate, it beats leaving Aladdin's Oasis shuttered, and regardless of whether the menu appeals to me, it will be a reason for me to return, in contrast to all the reasons the DLR management have been giving me lately NOT to return. As to alcohol, I maintain that Walt did not want public consumption of alcohol to be part of the "Magic Kingdom experience," and I still say that it was not only a mistake to start serving it in the WDW-MK's "Be Our Guest" (and subsequently, I hear, in other WDW-MK establishments), but a mistake to bow to French wine culture, back when DLP first opened. Years ago, when I was making a habit of spending New Year's Eve in DL, one of the reasons was precisely the absence of alcohol: neither the mouth-feel nor the effects, nor the antics of those who have overindulged, appeal to me, and I wanted to spend the evening among people who were somehow managing to enjoy themselves while just as stone cold sober as I was. (Now, I usually go to bed early on NYE, although this time, I stayed up and listened to the KUSC NYE broadcast, complete with Jim Svejda hobnobbing with Dr. Demento.) If people want to drink in a Disney theme park, well, DCA is within easy walking distance from DL (much easier than the WDW situation, since Epcot is a monorail ride away from WDW-MK, with a transfer at TTC).
I agree that they should not serve alcohol. Personally, I enjoy a little brewski or marg, but I can go to DTD for that. I guess I should be thankful they're not going to open a hookah in this location.
Hmm. A hookah lounge. Would Alice's friend, the Caterpillar, be there? At any rate, any discussion of "water pipes" reminds me of this image, a riff on a Magritte painting (and an old BC comic strip) that I came up with not quite a year ago. (I did a follow-up image, adding a bubble to the pipe, and changing the caption slightly, to "Ceci n'est pas une pipe d'eau. Ceci n'est pas non plus un pipe a bulles.") not_a_pipe by James Lampert, on Flickr
I wholeheartedly agree. And I love to drink when the occasion calls for it. Disneyland has made it 62 years without alcohol. Crowds are nearly always at or close to capacity these days. So they do not need it as a draw. It is just unnecessary. Some traditions should just be kept.
Kind of funny: the last time I voiced my objections to publicly accessible alcohol in Magic Kingdoms (ONLY Magic Kingdoms, NOT other Disney parks!) on this board, my opinion was widely shouted down. This time, the only other people who even took notice of my opinion (stated more vehemently this time!) agreed with me.
These days, I tend to get shouted down for expressing any opinion. On these boards, anytime I have suggested what Walt may or may not have wanted based on his words or actions, there's always been someone around to tell me how wrong I am. I don't mind if they offer evidence to the contrary, but it's usually just their opinion--and a chance to argue. So, since it's typically unproductive and stress inducing, I try to either offer my thoughts of support or I simply scroll along.
I certainly don't mean to say I'm disappointed that I'm not being shouted down. Just surprised at the agreement I'm getting. Maybe the trolls can't figure out how to get to the board from the new LP site. We can but hope.
