Wanted to get this section up-and-running with the new (BEAUTIFUL) update. So, as of now, we know it is coming in the Spring of 2018. Betsy Wolfe is going to play Elsa. She is best known for Everyday Rapture, The Last 5 Years, Mystery of Edwin Drood and Bullets Over Broadway. Rumors and various websites (like Broadway.com) are reporting that it will go into the St. James, which is odd since 1) There is a show currently running there (Something Rotten) with no closure announced 2) Disney usually works with the Nederlander Theater Organization, and the St. James is a Jujamcyn theater. Any other news, thoughts, excitements, etc. PLEASE POST!
Rumors are saying that Patti Murin will be playing Anna in the production! She is known for Lysistrata Jones, Wicked and the Nerds musical that was shut down before previews began this Spring.
I doubt Sometijng Rotten will still be playing in 2018. And even if it is, the theater would gladly boot them at the prospect of a show that has the chance to run forever. By the way, Wolfe and Murin are cast for the workshop that's currently happening. No one has officially been cast for the Broadway production. I figure Disney will make a much bigger deal when that announcement happens.
Olaf may get a new boss. Does anyone else get excited when two of their fandoms collide? I do, and the recent episode of Star Wars Oxygen, a podcast all about the music of John Williams in Star Wars, brought together two things near and dear to my heart: Star Wars and Frozen. Songwriter Robert Lopez stopped by to talk with hosts David W. Collins and Jimmy Mac, and though it’s not a surprise to hear about people being into Star Wars—it’s a massive pop culture phenomenon for a reason—it was entertaining to hear just how much of a fan Lopez is. He’s hugely into the franchise, and his work is influenced by Williams and explorations of Williams’ methods. Lopez stumbled upon Star Wars Oxygen through an article on IGN and the podcast actually helped him figure out next steps with writing songs for Frozen the Musical. He told Collins and Jimmy Mac, “ listened to all the back episodes, and it made me realize I’m kind of in a similar position to where John Williams was when he had to do Empire Strikes Back… He had to use the same DNA from Star Wars and expand the glossary of themes. Disney ’s “Frozen” isn’t slated to open until 2018, but it is already melting the status quo around one of Broadway’s most contentious issues: profit participation for actors. On Tuesday, Disney Theatrical Productions emailed actors explaining coming contracts that offer a percentage of future profits from “Frozen.” The contracts address this month’s developmental lab, a creative period usually covered by standard contracts with Actors’ Equity Association. Interesting that they talk about how strong the film's narrative is, considering that the third act is a hot mess That said, this production looks pretty promising. It really seems to have the potential to be better than the film, which despite its smashing success had a lot of flaws
Honestly, other than slowing the pace down, I'm not sure what exactly they could do. The film had a lot of story problems, and was significantly changed (making Hans the villain instead of Elsa) just a few months before it was released, and it's pretty clear during that part of the movie that were some bumps along the way. In the sing-a-long shows at the parks, the hosts even bumble through that part of the plot in a comedic way, trying to cover up how nonsensical it is I also think they could do more early on to flesh out the supporting cast and foreshadow the ending. In the animated movie, Anna has a bit of depth to her, but Elsa is the only dynamic character; the two male leads are pretty one-dimensional, and the supporting cast is hardly more than a moving background. Beefing up these things earlier on could help with the payoff toward the end The basic premise of the story works for me, but there's just so much that could be done to make it better
Hi everyone, it's been so long since I last posted. Since I was last here FROZEN has become my favorite Disney film, and I absolutely adore Princess Anna. I hope the musical will be a success. I should add that Patti Murin was also a regular on the TV series CHICAGO MED, which also stars her husband Colin Donnell. Caissie Levy is playing Queen Elsa. Like Patti, Caissie was also in WICKED, playing the role of Elphaba, a role originated by Idina Menzel, who of course went on to voice Elsa. Some coincidence, huh? I've seen pictures of Patti as Anna, and she is quite adorable.
The reviews are tepid. Those Broadway critics are nothing but a bunch of anti Disney jerks. I guess they'll never win a Tony Award for Best Musical this year.
