We live in Raleigh. On Feb 9, my wife is flying from Newark to Belfast, Northern Ireland. The flight is on Continental.

However, I booked it using Delta Skymiles (a codeshare thing). I didn't book the whole trip through from Raleigh through Delta because they weren't offering connections that made sense. 8 hour layovers, multiple stops to and from Newark etc.

So, I have to go buy tickets to Newark on Continental. How can I "Link" the 2 itineraries? Is there any way that she can check bags in RDU and then clear customs in NI? Or does she have to claim bags at EWR and then check back in?

I think she has to do that on the return because RDU does not have customs in the continental terminal. As I'm planning it, she's got a 2-hour connection in Newark to do all that. She may end up needing more time.

Or, am I off base here?

    Thanks

As far as combining the Itneraries the only way is to have the Airlines or Travel agent do it.
I'll have a baggage answer in a few minutes for you.

CO and DL do have a baggage agreement but if it is not on the same itinerary you need to let the airline know in advance.
