    Every year around this time I'm in the grocery...I get to the dairy, see the milk, scan for the holiday drinks, see the *gg n*g, shiver and try to keep my lunch down, and look for its innocent, peaceful, law-abiding neighbor, the boiled custard (otherwise known as "custard" for short).

    My mom always got n*g for Dad, and custard fer us kids. We just couldn't stand that other stuff, and would gladly drink as many glasses of custard as we could till we ran plumb out.

    It's such an experience...you open the fridge, pick up the carton with your efficient hand, open the oh-so-genius easy-pour spout, with a quick simple movement you turn it over to the glass, and the white, pure, untainted liquid that fairly speaks "Christmastime" oozes into the glass with its smooth creaminess. OOOOHHHhhhhhhhh...such flawless choreography, this "Custard Ballet".

    So come on, who's with me? Custard-lovers, be proud to be proclaim your loyalty to this unfairly-known-as "underdog" of the holiday drinks that is always overshadowed by that sinister, vile, nutmeggy troublemaker!

    WHEN IS IT CUSTARD'S TURN?!?!

    and idleHands, even though it's casually known as "custard", I like seein' "boiled custard" on the carton because it makes the germophobe in me think that any potentially harmful baceterias that may evilly sneak in are killed during the boiling process (haHA! Yes! Score one for hygiene!)

    I cant' believe more people don't know!!

    Lol, I don't make it, I buy it. Maybe custard custard is like puddin', but [boiled] custard is a rich, thick, creamy essence of the holiday spirit. Kinda like a smoothie, but even better. mm-mm-*MMMMmmmmm*...

    Thanks, MrsElderP. Now I at least have some idea of what it tastes like. It sounds kinda (glances over shoulder surreptitiously to see if TDG is within hearing range). . . bland. No nutmeg. No cinnamon. Huh. I may have to try it anyway.

    Hmmm, maybe it'e the recipe that's bland.

    Or grocery.

    (and it has vanilla extract! How can anything be bland with vanilla extract?? That's why they extract it!!)

    Must be the emu egg that gives it the special taste.

    What would the Christmas season be without our favorite drink? Sure, you could buy it already bottled at the supermarket but wouldn't this be better?

    Boiled Custard

    12 cups milk
    1 1/3 cups sugar
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 large emu egg or 12 chicken eggs - beaten
    2 teaspoons vanilla
    Heat the milk, sugar and salt in the top of a double boiler over simmering water.

    Slowly stir in the beaten egg. (Trust me, you better have that emu egg already well beaten). Cook, stirring constantly until the mixture coats the spoon, about 5 minutes.

    Remove from heat immediately and stir in the vanilla. Pour into container and place in refrigerator to cool.

    BOILED CUSTARD EGGNOG

    Recipe By :
    Serving Size : 12 Preparation Time :0:00
    Categories : Beverages

    Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
    -------- ------------ --------------------------------
    1 1/2 c Sugar
    1/4 c Flour
    1/8 ts Salt
    8 Egg yolks
    6 c Milk
    2 c Light cream
    1 t Vanilla extract
    1/8 ts Nutmeg
    1 1/2 c Whiskey (optional)

    Mix sugar, flour, and salt in heavy 6-qt saucepan. Add egg yolks and mix
    well. Using wire whisk, stir egg mixture and slowly pour in milk and
    cream. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until custard is thickened
    and just coats the back of a wooden spoon. Remove from heat and let cool.
    The custard will thicken as it cools. When cold, stir in vanilla, nutmeg,
    and whiskey.

    strange.... I will keep my eyes open for this at the grocery store. Those recipes do look mighty similar to homemade egg nog recipes ...without the emu egg that is. I think calling it custard might be a parents sneaky way of getting a child to drink eggnog =)

    The name does sound kind of gross. I love egg nog so I'd probably love boiled custard, too.
