Would they have shovels to clear the walkways? If the snow gets trampled on and then freezes overnight it would turn into ice. I can just imagine all the southern Californians slipping and falling down on the ice.

All heck broke out...we couldn't get to Bakersfield because of the snow...so we went back towards LA on hwy 14 and ran into snow...and some black ice....all in attempt to get to hwy 5...but once we got there, the grapevine was closed in both directions due to snow and at least 65 different accidents. The CHP said that was "enough" so they closed it all. The only way left to get home was thru hwy 101 along the coast. I was exhausted! Going over the Utah Mtns. we had snow and one lane open and no problems with cars driving thru...no accidents either...but I get towards California and some drivers just don't get it....we have an SUV w/ 4 wheel drive...absolutely no problems... And after all this rain in California? I am ready for some serious HEAT!!!!!!!!ºoº

Originally Posted By fkurucz >>but I get towards California and some drivers just don't get it<< It is a common misunderstanding that 4WD will make driving on snowpacked roads a snap. The only real use for 4WD is getting out when you are stuck. Once you are rolling the benefit is miminal (no better than a front wheel drive with snow tires). AWD is better than 4WD on snowpack, but you can still slip and fishtail. Hence all the Californians who end up rolling their SUV's into a ditch when they drive in the snow for the first time. Driving on a snow packed road is no big deal, as long as you go SLOWER than usual.
