I have tried looking at San Diego, but have no idea, is Mission Bay close enough? Or do I want to pay more and be more central? Thoughts welcome.. This is the last post, I already have the Anaheim section of the trip sorted All advice greatfully received

Dad had an awesome room. 4 poster bed, and huge whirlpool tub in the room. Our room was just a normal room and it was clean and the beds were very comfy. Even had good pillows. Indoor pool water temp was beautiful and hot tub for the winter months. The restraunt is only open if 40 or more rooms are booked. Crazy Overpriced but good food. Not to many other choices unless you drive a while or bring your own snack type foods. The Yosemite View Lodge is owned by the same people. These are both outside of the park. http://www.yosemite-motels.com...ndex.htm Mariposa is a long 45 min drive from the park entrance. We sent the boys there to grab pizza for lunch and they were gone forever. But it looks like a cute little town to shop in. Distance to the park was about 10 min drive. This is the on the all weather highway. HWY 140 remember to have chains with you even if you rent a 4x4 Yosemite requires that you carry them. Aunt and Uncle have 4x4 and they actaully had to show the ranger at the gate that they had them.

Don't forget to visit Mission San Diego and Old Town for a real Old California/Mexico vibe. For cheap digs central to everything (though requires driving too), Mission Valley and Hotel circle is fine.

I am glad people are saying the Mission Bay area is fine, I have looked at a couple of hotels there, and they seem to be a lot more reasonable, I am happy enough to drive, so that would be a good option. Ophellia, we are definitely planning on doing the zoo, and Balboa Park, not so sure about the wild animal park, if possible I would like to take a whale watching trip, assuming the timings work out to see whales

I found out about it on Tripadvisor, and am SO glad we stayed there.

Like I said, you can walk to Balboa Park and the zoo from there. I remember grabbing a burger at the zoo and bringing it back to the hotel. DD and I went to the courtyard to eat. Several other hotel guests were there also. It was like we were family or something. One of the guests had a bottle of wine and shared it. The hotel desk clerk came out with a plate of cheese and fruit for everyone to share. It was so wonderful. That was probably my most favorite hotel that I have ever stayed in. Next time we go to San Diego, we will stay there again.

I am going to email them from home to find out if there are rooms available when we're there, that way I wouldn't have to waste so much time on the phone to them when I call to book one Did you get to look into any of the other rooms? Or just the one you stayed in? Looking at the site they all seem to be pretty good sizes?

My favorite hotels in SD are the Courtyard by Marriott in the Gaslamp Area. Otherwise known as the Bank Hotel! It literally is in the old Lincoln Savings and Loan. The rooms are in the old offices upstairs, they have valet parking but are cleverly next to the Red line trolly for easy access to everything. Breakfast is included in the room. My other favorite is the Manchester Grand Hyatt. It looks very posh but you can hunt around for some great deals. We got it on Priceline for $89 a night and have since found that you can get it for less than $150 a night. The best thing is that it has a view of San Diego Bay, is also near the Red Line trolly, and it is right near the Star of India and other interesting Port points of interest. We go to San Diego about 1-3 times a year, so let us know what hotel you are looking at in the Mission Bay area and I'll let you know if we stayed there.

I've stayed in the Vagabond in Mission Valley, they allow pets (for an extra charge), the rooms are typical size and clean, it's right next to the 8 and near shopping, and if I'm not mistaken they have the free continental breakfast. Sort of what they call "close to everything".

The Comfort Inn in the Gaslamp Quarter was the worst hotel I've stayed at in decades. I'm sure I'll try Ursula's suggestions for next time if I can get a good rate.
