The Alice and rabbit characters will be added near a chessboard and red rose tree already existing in the Small World attraction. Officials confirmed that Alice is one of several Disney characters that will be added to Disneyland’s Small World in a controversial plan that has infuriated some purists. Officials have insisted that Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will not appear in the Anaheim attraction. The major rehab, which has been in the works for eight years, will “respect and honor the original creative intent†of Blair’s iconic work while adding “new richness, excitement and relevance,†according to an Imagineering official. The renovated ride will not be a “carbon copy†of the new Small World attraction at Hong Kong Disneyland, officials said.<< Check the link above to see a sketch of the proposed Alice figure.

The pictures of the Peter Pan and Mulan dolls from HK were pretty much in this style. Having said this, I still think it's a bad, bad idea. But there are degrees of bad, and if all the additions are child characters created in the same style, it would be LESS bad than adding Mickey and Goofy and Stitch. But still bad.

And for Disney, and especially Disneyland, there is a fairly good precedent for seeing public reaction reverse serious missteps. The biggest Disneyland Resort mistake of all time is being addressed to the tune of over one billion dollars, right now. Remember when Lincoln was going to be replaced by the Muppets? Didn't happen. Rocket Rods (Heck, most of TL '98.) or Super Star Limo? Paper plates in the Plaza Inn? All gone. Unless something is demolished, public reaction can replace/restore/correct anything that is grieviously bad. But if the public likes and wants the change (Captain Jack Sparrow, anyone?), then it will remain. Simple as that.

Besides, it's only a matter of time before it all gets changed again anyway. That's just the nature of things. It is unfortunate that these changes are happening, but they really reflect the mindset of the company as a whole. Characters in Small World are just one of the numerous poor decisions coming out of WDI these days.
