A major contrete slab of driving surface is being inserted unto the bridge and will take several days to complete the job. Utilizing the holiday weekend was the best time to avoid major traffic delays that are usually associated with Monday-Friday commuter traffic. San Francisco visitors should plan an alternate route by using the Golden Gate Bridge or San Mateo Bridge and allow extra time to reach "The City". Local leaders are also strongly recommending that visitors use BART subway, MUNI public buses, ferry boats or other forms of public transportation to get into and out of San Francisco. After the Labor Day weekend, the Bay Bridge bridge is scheduled to re-open on Tuesday, September 4 for regular business commuter traffic.
