As soon as I got home, I checked online .. and saw it was showing in some half a dozen movie theaters in and around the Sydney greater area. For Saturday and Sunday only. One 3:30pm showing for both days. So, I got in for the Sunday showing at a local theater ... and I was enjoying the movie .. for the umpteenth time. This time in 3D .. and it was nice treat. So, I just assumed any showings in the states had already occurred. On the wikepidia page for the film .. it says: "A IMAX 3D theatrical re-release will play in theaters for one week beginning September 20, 2013 as part of the film's 75th Anniversary." So, it hasn't happened yet for the U.S. I wonder why it got shown to Australian theaters before the U.S. (?). So don't miss it gang! For those of you who are big Wizard of Oz fans .... go see it. Of course ... not having been filmed in 3D in the first place .. it's not the best 3D effect. But after what I saw ... it was a fairly decent effect. Gave it some "depth". And because it is not a widescreen film ... get a little closer to that screen ... for that "Big Screen" effect. The showing I saw: I saw it in a multiplex. One of the smaller auditoriums. I got in close enough .. to get that big screen effect. One irritating thing they did in this presentation, it was ever so slightly cropped to something like 1.66:1 .. and some heads are slightly cropped. And I wasn't thrilled about Toto's head being slightly cropped during "Over the Rainbow". But for the most part, it was enjoyable seeing it on the big screen, with the best "3D" effect modern technology could deliver. Sound? Hard to tell if it was in stereo. I think it was. As most "Oz" buffs will know ... in the 90s ... the original orchestra "stem" recordings were rediscovered. And eventually remixed the film into true stereo. So, maybe the theater I saw it in had mediocre sound systems. But anyway how .. since it hasn't came to U.S. theaters in the states yet ... don't miss out!

(By the way - Speaking of films with continuing shows: Behind the Candelabra has been in a few theaters for more than a month now. I saw it on the big screen, and thought Michael Douglas should get an Academy Award nomination ... Just to find out it was an HBO Film - Made for TV, for the U.S. But here in Australia ... if you want to see it "theatrically" on the big screen ...you can.)

Just before Turner closed their West LA operations, and everything .. and everyone absorbed into Warner Brothers .. or were let go. It was at that time, I got an education on MGM's film library and the various "stem" soundtrack elements .. and at that time were being restored, with hopes of re-issuing home video releases in true stereo - including Wizard of Oz. This all before the days of Bluray .. and now Bluray 3D. So, I haven't got a clue if studio heads will ever re-release some of the lesser titles in Bluray (Babes on Broadway for example) .. or forever only ever be shown in the lesser DVD format. I'm still waiting for Fox to redo "Oklahoma", "Carousel", and "King and I" in Bluray. (Only "Sound of Music" and "South Pacific" are on Bluray.)

Baz is Australian ... perhaps he'll forge a deal with Australian film exhibitors and do "Moulin" in 3D. Even if the U.S. says no. Not that it necessarily will ... just say'n.
