A hero will risk his life to save another not for glory/fame/money/sport but out of love and/or complete selflessness--- like some of those police, firefighters and common citizens involved in the twin towers fall.

I'm willing to bet countless care a great deal since they like to live their lives through famous people.

///whats so heroic about some guy swim///

    nothing, absolutely nothing.

brandishing multiple gold necklaces is extraordinary, indeed, but not heroic in the slightest.

The term Hero is definetly up to different individual interpretation.

If hero is too strong - what about role model for hard work and persistence.

I Understand heros are definately military and EMS/FF/Police etc adn rightly so. My boys can call a someone who works hard everyday to achieve their goals a hero any day.

Just because he didn't run into a burning building and save someone's life doesn't not make him a hero.

Besides, a "role model's welcome" parade just doesn't have the same ring to it that "hero's welcome" does.

Besides, usually they call gold medals (mostly multiple gold medalists) Olympic Heroes. The hype will die down soon... mostly into October after all the talk shows who booked him get their chance.

Michael Phelps was in the UK just last Weekend as part of the official handover for the 2012 London Olympics, and recieved a amazing response from the crowds, even though he's not part of Team GB, you still can't take away what this man was able to achieve, by taking away 8 gold medals.

I would have been in a heartbeat - except for the fact that I live several thousand miles away from Florida, oh and I have 2 kids that I have to take care of, oh and plane tickets cost money - lots of money!!

If he shows up somewhere that's actually realistic for me to travel to I'll be there with bells on!!!

    :)
