Sadly there are some horrific situations at so called good hotels, and great cheap places too. Disney sadly falls short in most of their resorts these days, but having averaged 8-10 nights a month in a hotel over the last 13 years (10 years go closer to 18 a month), I am a little picky about where I stay.

I think any hotel can have lazy cleaning people - letting the hotel know is the only way to help the hotel know what is going on.
I have had better service at lower end hotels than some higher end... I would say the worst was the Hilton on Convention Way... just horrible -

At Paris, the only decent quality Disney hotel is DLH, but at $500-$800 a night, it is terribly overpriced.

In WDW, well to be honest I find all of the hotels lacking (despite having fantastic architecture).

But there are some Holiday Inn expresses and some independent hotels out there that are out of this world.

For chains, I find most Marriotts and Holiday Inn/Crown Plazas/Intercontinental offer consistantly great stays.

If Disney kicked it up a notch, they could have some of the best (and indeed the Grand Californian and the DLH Paris are some of the best).

The only reason I don't stay there is I like to go alot (10 times last year) and I find Priceline the best way to do that... If I was going when the park was closing early - or if I knew we would be spending time poolside I would probably be more interested.
I can't wait to go to WDW - I will probably to a value hotel... For me it's just somewhere to sleep. As long as it's clean I am happy.

Oh and I usually take lysol and spray stuff down anywhere I stay!

I used to be like that, but then there are two factors for me:

    a) because I stay in hotels frequently, I want my vacation to be something special accommodation wise (hence why we bought into Marriott Vacation Club)

    b) taking little ones means more hotel time.

As they get older, they may change.

Staying at the Westin by the harbour in Toronto, they don't even have decent water pressure. The Sheraton LaJolla is good but it used to be a Radisson and still has Radisson staff.

The Springhill in a certain Michigan tourist town is fab. Oh and downtown Detroit trust me Marriott, the round one where GM is located. Oh and for those who travel to Chicago what's a good hotel on the Mile?

In regards to clean rooms though I wonder if 2Q rooms or family rooms have less uh special events then K bedded rooms (Especially the Honeymoon)

Whenever it's on my dime I'll stay at a Marriott (Springhill or Courtyard usually) or a Holiday Inn. I try to stay at newer builds to avoid some problems (I know this isn't an indicator of service though) Newer builds tend to get more attention and less wear for obvious reasons. Also -> signature locations tend to be good for any chain (but normally pricey) A few years ago I was a Red Roof / Econolodge type of guy most Red Roofs were good, Econolodge is way to hit and miss. Some of the worst hotels (ie disgusting with blood stains on the bed) and some of the best service I've recieved however have been Econolodges. I don't like the laminates in the newer Red Roofs though.

I stayed here once. Ugh. But believe it or not I stayed in a La Quinta in Nashville that was worse.

This all started because EVERYTIME we went on vacation, someone got sick. I'm not really anal about it, it just makes me feel a tad better. Especially during cold and flu season :)

I take my own pillow when I can.

DH could care less about any of the above.

I don't care for turn down service either. Just makes me feel awkward.
