Which is a better time to go and why: mid-November (before Thanksgiving) or mid-December (before Christmas).

I personally really prefer November b/c all the decorations are up and Santa is there by mid-November and yet the weather is a bit nicer (warmer) and the crowds are a little smaller- esp. compared to Christmas break! Times to avoid in Nov if you don't like crowds are Veteran's day (and usually the preceeding week-end) and Thanksgiving week.:)

Until recently, I was always there just before Christmas as well (visiting an elderly relative in the area). It was always a lot more crowded than the 1st week.

It sounds like I might prefer mid-November, but is there anything holiday-related that I would miss out on vs. waiting until mid-December?

The Christmas parade starts on a Friday so we are there from Sunday to Saturday. All of the decorations are up, you get to see Santa, get the holiday photo for the Christmas card, see the parade and watch the fireworks. Only thing I have found that we seem to miss--making of the candy canes.
